Variety of the best non-toxic and eco-friendly sippy cups 6 cups shown some with straw, spout and open lid

Finding the best non-toxic and eco-friendly sippy cup for your little ones in todays market can be a challenge. I created this article to help you navigate the best sippy cups on the market that are eco-friendly, durable and less toxic than the traditional sippy cups you find in big box stores. I’ve also included some other products on this list to round out the kid friendly finds since most kids are using sippy cups for a short amount of time.

Why are traditional sippy cups an issue?

Traditional sippy cups are often comprised of plastic which can have harmful chemicals that leach into your little ones drinks as they consume them. Typically drinks that are staying cool do not have as much leaching but plastic cups are still a concern not only for health but also the environment.

We are producing so much plastic that our earth is filling with Microplastics. These Microplastics are seeping into our water supply and are even being found in the human blood supply and brain. They have been linked to autoimmune disease and even cancer. Anything we can do to reduce the use of plastic and especially short-lived plastic is a step in the right direction.

The other issue with traditional sippy cups is related to oral health. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends limiting and or stopping sippy cup use around 1 year of age. It states that prolonged use can lead to dental issues, tooth decay, and hinder oral motor skills necessary for correct development. https://www.aap.org/en-us/about-the-aap/aap-press-room/Pages/Sippy-Cups-May-Be-Harmful-to-Childrens-Teeth.aspx

What materials make traditional sippy cups more non-toxic?

BPA, Phthalates, Lead, PVC, heavy metals, and Polystyrene are all chemicals or materials used in the manufacturing of sippy cups. However, they have been linked to a range of serious health problems. BPA, for example, is a chemical used in polycarbonate plastics that are used in some sippy cups and has been linked to hormonal disruptions and developmental issues in children.

Meanwhile, Phthalates are known to affect hormone levels and can cause developmental problems. Lead can be found in some ceramic or painted sippy cups and can cause neurological problems and other health issues. PVC is a plastic material that releases toxic dioxins when not disposed of properly. Finally, some disposable sippy cups made from Polystyrene can release harmful chemicals when incinerated and are not biodegradable.

What materials make sippy cups more eco-friendly?

 • Stainless steel cups can be a great option for an eco-friendly cup material. There are lots of stainless steel options on the market for water bottles, trainer cup(s) and transition cup(s).
 • Glass is another great choice for cup materials. It is recyclable, does not leach and long lasting. I personally prefer glass over stainless steel because stainless steel does have the potential to leach.
 • Food grade silicone is another option for more eco-friendly and non-toxic materials. Food grade silicone is a safe non-toxic option but be sure it is labeled food-grade because non-food grade silicone of FDA approved (meaning it is indeed food-grade) can have fillers, additives and less safe materials.
 • Bamboo is biodegradable and eco-friendly. They are also lightweight and durable which is a great option depending on the age and temperament of your children!
 • Plant-based plastic is another great option. These are often made from plant-based plastics like cornstarch, biodegradable and safer than traditional plastic sippy cups.

The List of the Best Non-Toxic and Eco-Friendly Sippy Cups

Bamboo

WeeSprout (Best Customer Service)

 • Highlights
 • Material: Bamboo and Silicone
 • Design: Cup with lid and silicone bite straw
 • Ideal Age: 18 months+
 • Care: Dishwasher Safe
 • Capacity: 10oz
 • Durability: 3 Stars
 • Reviews: 1800+ 5 star reviews

This bamboo sippy cup is perfect for transitioning to toddler but be aware they are not completely spill proof. Since they have a hole above the mouth hole to vent for air they will leak if tipped over. They are eco-friendly, food grade and have a minimalist design

The biggest complaint is they are not as durable as other bamboo cups and can crack easily when dropped.

Bamboo Bamboo

 • Highlights
 • Material: Bamboo and Silicone
 • Design: Open cup, no lid, silicone liner
 • Ideal Age: 2 years+
 • Care: Handwash Only
 • Capacity: 8 oz
 • Durability: 4 Stars
 • Reviews: 500+ 5 star reviews

This is an open regular cup that is great for little ones being monitored during a meal time or older kids. I personally didn’t let my child use open cups regularly at meals until 2 and then unsupervised until closer to 4 to save myself the mess! The design is a honey jar shape and silicone is food grade, FDA approved. It can be used to yogurts or other snacks too! The silicone is removable for cleaning as well.

The biggest complaint is the silicone liner makes the rim really thick and is an added challenge to learning how to use an open design cup. Others stated the honey jar design widens the bottom and may not be the best for little hands.

Grow Forward (Most Eco-Friendly)

 • Highlights
 • Material: Bamboo and Silicone
 • Design: Cup with flat silicone top and silicone straw
 • Ideal Age: 9 months+
 • Care: Dishwasher safe (top rack)
 • Capacity: 10oz
 • Durability: 3 Stars
 • Reviews: 450+ 5 star reviews

These are a great option for a transition from a bottle. They have a lid and straw but are not 100% spill proof. They are better than an open cup of course but you’ll still need catch spills quickly. They are non-toxic, food grade silicone and 100% sustainably harvested from bamboo. They are also very proactive in utilizing safe dyes, and avoiding harmful chemicals in their products and production.

The biggest complaint is the lid is not very secure which you can see in the pictures. It’s an easy pop on and off.

Stainless Steel

Tiblue

 • Highlights
 • Material: Stainless steel, plastic and Silicone
 • Design: Cup with lid and silicone straw
 • Ideal Age: 9 months+
 • Care: Dishwasher safe (top rack)
 • Capacity: 8oz
 • Durability: 5 Stars
 • Reviews: 1900+ 5 star reviews

This is a great choice for a stainless steel option with a silicone straw. It is a tumbler style just like the larger adult versions. It’s made of non-toxic materials and the plastic lid is BPA free. All materials are labeled food grade and very durable.

Biggest complaint is that while the lids do pretty well and stay out for the most part they will come off if your child lifts the cup by the straw or drops it because they are not screw in.

Elk and Friends

 • Highlights
 • Material: Stainless steel and Silicone
 • Design: Cup with screw lid and silicone straw
 • Ideal Age: 9 months+
 • Care: Dishwasher safe (top rack)
 • Capacity: 10 oz
 • Durability: 5 Stars
 • Reviews: 3800+ 5 star reviews

I love this brand and it’s what I use the most in my house. They are made of stainless steel and food grade silicone. The best part is that they the most spill proof outside of the traditional sippy cups that I’ve found. The lid screws on so there is no popping off. The company is focused on eco-friendly safe products.

The biggest complaint is that people say they leak. This has not been my experience with this product as long as you use the silicone ring that is included with the cups.

Chillout Life (Best reviews + 100% Plastic Free)

 • Highlights
 • Material: Stainless steel
 • Design: Open, no lid cup
 • Ideal Age: 18 months+
 • Care: Dishwasher safe (top rack)
 • Capacity: 8 oz
 • Durability: 5 Stars
 • Reviews: 2400+ 5 star reviews

These are stated to be unbreakable cups for kids and adults. They are 100% food grade 18/8 stainless steel. If your looking for a cup totally free of toxins and plastic this could be it but you give up the convenience of a spill-proof cup for kids.

The biggest complaint for these is the 8oz size is very small but 87% of people have this product 5 stars which is a great percentage of 5 star ratings.

Shine Me

 • Highlights
 • Material: Stainless steel and plastic
 • Design: Open cup with lid, no straw
 • Ideal Age: 9 months+
 • Care: Dishwasher safe (top rack)
 • Capacity: 12 oz
 • Durability: 5 Stars
 • Reviews: 500+ 5 star reviews
 • The shine me is a stainless steel cup with a plastic lid. It is very durable and spill-proof. It also has a silicone sleeve to make it easy to grip and perfect for hot or cold liquids. It’s a great way to transition to a open cup without having to take the risk of spills of a totally open cup.

The biggest complaint is they get super hot with hot liquids. You have to hold the silicone sleeve and even then it can still feel very hot, so if you’re planning on using them for that it may be best to look elsewhere.

Koodee (Most colors available)

 • Highlights
 • Material: Stainless steel, silicone base and plastic lid
 • Design: Screw top bottle with hard spout.
 • Ideal Age: 18 months+
 • Care: Handwash
 • Capacity: 12 oz
 • Durability: 4 Stars
 • Reviews: 2300+ 5 star reviews

Koodee’s commitment to the environment is in their process of making high quality products that stand the test of time and meet the highest safety standards. They utilize food grade stainless steel for the cup, a silicone base to protect the coating and a hard spout plastic lid. This is best used and marketed as a water bottle for kids but they also have larger sizes for adults if you want to match. They come in a variety of different colors and are 100% leak proof when closed.

The biggest complaint is the lid is not as durable as advertised. Many have had issues with leaking and damage with regular short-term use.

Pura (100% Plastic Free)

 • Highlights
 • Material: Stainless steel and silicone
 • Design: Stainless steel base with silicone interchangeable spout.
 • Ideal Age: 0 months+
 • Care: Handwash
 • Capacity: 11 oz
 • Durability: 4 Stars
 • Reviews: 1600+ 5 star reviews

Pura Kiki is a 100% plastic-free sippy cup for babies and toddlers. It looks similar to a baby bottle but the top is made of a soft spout silicone that is actually interchangeable. It comes with a sippy style spout but you can put a baby bottle nipple, or any other drink type spout. It is make with food-grade silicone and metal grade stainless steel. They pledge to put sustainability first with their products by using safe non-toxic materials that are built to last and recyclable. Pura also makes a ton variety of kid friendly sippy cups and bottles if you need something small, larger or a different design.

The biggest complaint is that it dents easily when dropped. There are other versions that are more insulated and do not but this specific version that I linked is not heavily insulated and a lighter version.

Silicone

Pura my-my

 • Highlights
 • Material: Silicone
 • Design: Silicone cup with soft straw
 • Ideal Age: 6 months+
 • Care: Dishwasher safe (top rack)
 • Capacity: 5 oz
 • Durability: 5 Stars
 • Reviews: 7+ 5 star reviews

Pura my-my is a 100% food-grade silicone sippy cup that is designed to be a toddler training cup. It is 100% plastic free and spill proof for little ones. It has a retractable straw but if you want a traditional spout they also have that version. The cup can also be used without the top as a open cup which makes it even more versatile.

The biggest complaint is that spills can still happen if the cup is squeezed hard or turned upside down from the straw.

Mushie

 • Highlights
 • Material: Silicone
 • Design: Silicone cup with straw and handles
 • Ideal Age: 6 months+
 • Care: Dishwasher safe (top rack)
 • Capacity: 5 oz
 • Durability: 5 Stars
 • Reviews: 550+ 5 star reviews

This is another 100% silicone cup that is free of plastic. It is designed with easy-grip handles to make holding better for little ones and less likely they will drop since they can gain a better grip. It comes in a very minimalist design with various colors (muted/pastel) to choose from. Their product is BPA free, PVC, and phthalate free. It is made with food-grade silicone as well, which is critical when considering silicone options.

The biggest complaint is it can leak easily when kids pull on the straw or drop the cup.

Munchkin

 • Highlights
 • Material: Silicone
 • Design: Silicone cup with lid and straw
 • Ideal Age: 6 months+
 • Care: Dishwasher safe (top rack)
 • Capacity: 4 oz
 • Durability: 5 Stars
 • Reviews: 140+ 5 star reviews

Munchkin is a popular brand that typically makes traditional plastic products but is creating some more eco-friendly, non-toxic designs. I know many are against buying from companies that product toxic products but each dollar you spend is a vote and if companies see their eco-friendly non-toxic products outperforming their traditional ones it could lead to more eco-friendly products. This cup has ultra little for those extra small hands at just 4 ounces and the perfect transition from a bottle. It is not a leakproof lid but the top stays pretty well fit and the weighted base helps uncoordinated hands keep it upright. This is a sippy straw cup like many of the other silicone competitors and promotes correct oral development/use.

The biggest complaint is how small this cup is. So not actual defects just a little size but that also means little messes if anything gets spilled!

Go Sili

 • Highlights
 • Material: Silicone and Stainless steel
 • Design: Silicone cup with 360 degree sealing lid
 • Ideal Age: 6 months+
 • Care: Dishwasher safe (top rack)
 • Capacity: 12 oz
 • Durability: 5 Stars
 • Reviews: Unknown

The Go Sili is a 100% silicone and 100% stainless steel munchkin miracle dupe. It has the same 360 degree drinking design that has a self-sealing silicone lid for when kids aren’t drinking. The safe, eco-friendly materials make it a better choice than the munchkin miracle 360 degree design. The stainless steel ring keeps the cup firm and strong.

The biggest issue I see is this product not being on amazon!

Glass

Elk and Friends (My absolute favorite)

 • Highlights
 • Material: Glass, silicone and plastic
 • Design: Glass cup, silicone sleeve and plastic screw lid
 • Ideal Age: 6 months+
 • Care: Dishwasher safe (top rack)
 • Capacity: 8 oz
 • Durability: 4 Stars
 • Reviews: 700+ 5 star reviews

The Elk and Friends glass cups are what we use in my house for about 90% of our drink needs. Once my little one was old enough I even put breast milk in these for her to drink as we transitioned away from bottles. I love the durability and I personally prefer drinking from glass which is why this is my top choice. They are not spill proof but the straw has a stopper to keep it in the cup and the spills are slow so it’s not usually a massive mess. The lid screws on so there is not popping off and the sleeve is silicone so kids can get a good grip.

The biggest complaint on these is durability. They will break if thrown or dropped super hard. We have had 2 total break in the 2+ years of owning them and when the little glass jars do break they are in pretty large chunks so I did not have a hard time cleaning it up.

Green Sprouts

 • Highlights
 • Material: Glass, silicone and plastic
 • Design: Glass cup, silicone sleeve/straw and plastic lid
 • Ideal Age: 6 months+
 • Care: Hand wash only
 • Capacity: 4 oz
 • Durability: 3 Stars
 • Reviews: 400+ 5 star reviews

The green sprouts sippy cup is a great choice for little ones that like handles and prefer drinking from glass bottles instead of silicone, steel or plastic. They are an eco-friendly non-toxic design. They have a soft silicone straw that is vented for easy drinking and transitioning from a bottle. They have a few different colors available and replacement parts to order should you misplace on of the parts.

The biggest complaint is the durability and ease of breaking this either while cleaning or by a child dropping it.

The Luca

 • Highlights
 • Material: Glass, silicone and plastic
 • Design: Glass cup, silicone sleeve/straw, plastic removable handles
 • Ideal Age: 6 months+
 • Care: Hand wash only
 • Capacity: 8 oz
 • Durability: 4 Stars
 • Reviews: 370+ 5 star reviews

The luca sippy cup is made of glass with a silicone sleeve and straw for drinking. It is a good size and the best choice if you want to start with handles and move to a no handle cup later on. The company uses a glass that is stronger than typical glass to help with durability but it does make it slightly heavy for your little ones.

The biggest complaint is they are not leak proof so they are best for older babies that can manage to keep them mostly upright. Like the Elk and Friends if they do tip the spill is slow moving but still something to consider.

Hamarue (Most Versatile)

 • Highlights
 • Material: Glass, silicone and plastic
 • Design: Glass cup, silicone sleeve/straw, plastic removable handles
 • Ideal Age: 0 months+
 • Care: Hand wash only
 • Capacity: 5 oz
 • Durability: 4 Stars
 • Reviews: 60+ 5 star reviews

The Hamarue is a great choice if you are looking for an all in one product to take you from newborn to toddler transition cups. It has a silicone coated glass base, removable handles and interchangeable tops to make it a nipple, traditional sippy cup lid or straw. The cups eco-friendly materials and design make it a great choice and the company is committed to testing for toxic substances making it one of the best non-toxic sippy cups on the market.

The biggest complaint is durability. The glass is easy to break and the silicone coating only does so much without an actual sleeve.

Have you tried any of these in your home? I feel like sippy cups are something that are easy to accumulate lots of because they break, get lost or wear out thanks to all day everyday use.

Ultimate List of the Best Pregnancy-Safe Non-Toxic Nail Polishes https://thekindanaturalmom.com/ultimate-list-of-the-best-pregnancy-safe-non-toxic-nail-polishes/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ultimate-list-of-the-best-pregnancy-safe-non-toxic-nail-polishes Mon, 27 Feb 2023 06:07:12 +0000 https://thekindanaturalmom.com/?p=1866 Pregnant woman holding hands in heart shape on belly.

Pregnancy is such an amazing time (for many it also has some downside lol) but many its important to take extra precautions to protect our little ones. Nail polish is probably not your first thought of things to swap out but it can have some really nasty chemicals that could actually cause real harm to your developing baby. Many scientific studies have show adverse effects on developing fetuses that were exposed to the chemicals in nail polish so its important to look for a safe swap. Here I complied some information on toxic and non-toxic nail polishes as well as a list of the best pregnancy-safe non-toxic nail polishes on the market, plus my absolute favorite brand!

What are harmful ingredients in traditional nail polishes?

Many traditional nail polishes have ingredients that can wreck havoc on your body and are especially concerning for a developing fetus. The most common toxic chemicals found in traditional nail polish are;

 • Formaldehyde: This is a gas that has been linked to skin irritations, respiratory issues and even cancer with long-term exposure as stated in the BLAH BAH STUDY
 • Toluene: This chemical is a solvent that helps nail polish be smooth but can cause negative effects on the nervous system cause headaches, dizziness and has been linked to reproductive or fertility issues.
 • Phthalates: These chemical are known endocrine disruptors issues. and have also been linked to fertility problems and even birth defects.
 • Camphor: This is another harsh chemical that helps give nail polish its shine but has been linked to allergic reactions and skin problems.
 • Formaldehyde Resin: This comes from formaldehyde and is known for causing allergic reactions and skin irritations as well.
 • Ethyl Acetate: Another in this list of harsh chemicals that can cause skin irritations, respiratory problems and allergic reactions.
 • Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP): This chemical is a part of the phthalates but is especially concerning due to its effects on the reproductive system. The European Union banned it use in cosmetics almost 20 years ago in 2004.
 • Ethyl Tosylamide: This is a common chemical found in nail polish to assist with durability. The EWG has stated it is unsafe and a potential endocrine disrupter while the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has stated it is safe in concentrations of up to 5%.
 • Triphenyl Phosphate: Is another toxic ingredient still used in many traditional nail polish brands and has been found to disrupt hormones in the body and potentially lead to reproductive problems.

Formaldehyde, toluene and phthalates are specifically concerning for pregnant women as they have all be linked to reproductive issues and potential harm for an unborn baby. They are actually commonly referred to as the toxic trio because they are highly toxic ingredients. Some have been linked to neurobehavioral abnormalities, birth defects, increase risk of miscarriage, preterm delivery, and developmental delays.

I had a conversation with a someone who said she really wasn’t that worried about the risk because she was using such a small amount of nail polish and maybe the risk is so minimal there shouldn’t be concern but in my opinion you never know.

I could not risk something as serious as a birth defect for my child so I could have cute nails for 9 months. The good news is there are many companies who’ve caught on to consume demand for safer products and we don’t go without polish through pregnancy for the sake of safety.

What makes non-toxic nail polishes more safe?

Safe non-toxic nail polish brands are made with a water-based formula instead of chemical based which obviously makes a huge difference. Non-toxic brands are popping up so frequently that there are tons of options. There are even large commercial companies catching on to the fact pregnant women want safer more natural nail polish products for themselves and their babies.

Is a nail salon safe to visit while pregnant?

Pregnant woman getting nails done in salon.

Maybe, multiple sources state it is safe to go to a nail salon while pregnant. However, there have been multiple studies on expectant mothers working in salons that show it is unsafe and can lead to low birth weight and smaller head circumference (Check one of those studies out here). These studies could of course be related to the amount of exposure which is very different if you do not work there versus just visit.

I think finding an alternative like a home salon that allows you to provide your own non-toxic nail products would be best. You could also have the option to open windows in a home salon or at your home home if you found a traveling nail technician. If that’s not an option going early in the morning when its less busy and some of the toxins have had some time to air out. Its important to remember that your talking about reducing risk for 9 months to ensure your baby is setup for the best possible life possible.

Is nail polish remover safe to use while pregnant?

Yes, nail polish remover made from acetone is considered safe to use during pregnancy. It is important to use it in a well-ventilated area. I personally choose acetone free brands but this is a personal choice based on my ongoing decision to avoid chemicals, as I haven’t found any research that causes concern for using acetone removers.

Some nail polish contains ethyl acetate which can be more toxic so be sure to check the label and stick to acetone only products.

Are gel manicures safe while pregnant?

Yes, there are several brands of 10-free nail polish that can give you a safe, non-toxic gel manicure. Some of the brands listed below offer gel manicures, the most popular being SOPHi.

What does 10-free, 3-free and 5-free formula nail polish mean?

The number-free of these nail polishes means they are free from a specific number of traditional nasty chemicals discussed in this article. 3-free typically means they are free from formaldehyde, toluene and phthalates. While I recommend going for a 10 or 7 free formula even a 3 free is significantly better than a traditional polish product still containing every toxic ingredient available.

Be aware that not all 10, 5, or 3 free formulas are safe. There are several mainstream brands that greenwash customers into thinking their “natural” products are safe through marketing gimmicks. Sally Hansen’s line of pure nail polishes is absolutely safer than traditional nail polish but still has a few ingredients that can cause concern.

A note on most “non-toxic polishes”, they are significantly safer than traditional polishes but still have some ingredients that aren’t considered completely clean. Most of these ingredients that are cause for concern are skin irritants and not endocrine-disrupting chemicals but you have to make the choice for yourself as to what you are personally comfortable.

They are vegan, cruelty free and really environmentally conscious. Their products (like many polishes) come in a glass bottle and are infused with bio-ceramics to be good for your nails. I will note I own a few colors from this brand and find you must use base and top coat for it to stay as just a quick polish only won’t last more than 24 hours.

 • Colors: 6 colors
 • Concerns: Contains fragrance, not long-lasting
 • Reviews: 1800+ 5 star reviews
 • Price: $$$ (must by set of 6)
Buy Bontime on Amazon

I included this one because it has a lot of reviews on amazon, 3000+ at the time of rating. I personally don’t love when sites do not have their own websites that detail information on their policies, practices and mission. I did run the ingredients through the skincharmisa analyzer and the fragrance was the biggest concern so it does appear to be mostly non-toxic. The peel feature is cool and if that’s something that interests you try it out, if not I’d stick to one of the other brands that have bit more information on them.

OUL’ISI

 • Features: 21-free, fast dry, wide brush
 • Colors: 30+ colors
 • Concerns: Does not stay for more than 24 hours

 • Price: $ (must by set of 6)

This is another Amazon only based brand which I’ve already stated isn’t my favorite type of company. You also have to buy a gift set but their product price is very cheap so the set comes out to be about what some other brands single bottle is. They state they are eco-friendly and 20-free but again without being able to see their actual practices it’s hard to know. The biggest plus for them is their variety of colors and fast dry technology which others have mentioned is an issue with other polishes.

Eternal

 • Features: 21-free, 6-day lasting power, lots of glitter polishes
 • Colors: 25+ colors
 • Concerns: Requires 2+ coats to shine and stay
 • Reviews: 440+ 5 star ratings
 • Price: $$ (must by set of 4)

This brand is about making great products that are non-toxic but still affordable for everyone. They have an entire beauty care line that is vegan, cruelty-free and non-toxic. You can only buy sets of their polish which is a bit of a down side but when you look at the set price its 5 separate colors and still fairly affordable.

Snuggle Me Organic vs. DockATot Lounger: Which is Best? https://thekindanaturalmom.com/snuggle-me-organic-vs-dockatot-lounger-which-is-best/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=snuggle-me-organic-vs-dockatot-lounger-which-is-best Tue, 14 Feb 2023 17:49:47 +0000 https://thekindanaturalmom.com/?p=1783 Read more

]]>
The Snuggle Me Organic and DockATot lounger are two of the most popular baby loungers on the market. They both have great reviews but you’re probably wondering which is the best fit for you and your baby’s needs.

In this article I have gone through all the information for both loungers and given you some of my personal experience as a Snuggle Me Organic owner and someone who has personally tried the DockATot. So lets get into the Snuggle Me Organic vs. DockaTot lounger review!

It is important to note that for baby sleep, neither of these are the option you want to go with. These loungers are designed to be a safe place for baby to lounge, play, do tummy time and be held in. They do not meet the American Academy of Pediatrics safe sleep guidelines.

Baby loungers came into the marketplace in the early 2000’s. Both models we are looking at today were created by Mom’s for their newborn baby. These parents were looking for something that didn’t exist yet, so they created it. Baby loungers are designed to hold baby’s body in a comfortable snug fit kind of way. These are supposed to mimic a womb like environment that helps babies feel calm and soothed when they are not being held. My first daughter was not the biggest fan but my second really enjoyed her lounger.

The snuggle me lounger (the one I own) was perfect for me to move my newborn baby around while I played with my older child.

These loungers can be placed in areas that might not otherwise be safe like a bed, couch or floor because they have the barrier to prevent babies from scooting around and off a surface. Of course the safest place for them is in an area that a baby can never fall from and can cause injury.

Let’s get into analyzing both the Snuggle Me Organic and DockATot to determine what the best baby lounger for you is.

About the Snuggle Me Organic Company.

Snuggle Me is a brand founded in 2014 that specializes in baby products with an emphasis on making them safe, easy to use and portable for parents. They also believe in using high-quality, organic products that utilize non-toxic materials so parents do not ever have to wonder if the items closest to their babies are toxic. Snuggle Me originally stated with just their Snuggle Me Organic lounger but has since expanded to making larger snuggle me loungers, feeding pillows, clothes and other accessories.

Snuggle Me Organic Blush

What is the Snuggle Me Organic?

The Snuggle Me Organic is filled with organic cotton and shaped in an oval like crescent shape, to mimic the feeling of a baby being held or hugged. It is also referred to as a baby nest because of the size, shape and function.

The edges of the pillow, where the filling is, are soft but the filling is firm enough so it won’t collapse or giveaway if the baby rolls towards it. The base of the pillow is a thin layer of soft 95% organic cotton that has no padding. This bottom layer means that the baby will likely feel whatever surface they are placed on so it’s important to ensure you place it on a flat surface.

The snuggle me measures 29 x 17 x 4.5 inches which is fairly small and easily portable to your home, park or other locations. The outer shell material is 100% organic cotton and non-toxic in materials used to produce it. The filling is polyester fiber which is typically considered non-toxic.

It is worth noting there is also a larger size of the snuggle me for older babies and toddlers to use.

What are the key features of the Snuggle Me Organic?

 • -100% Organic Cotton, Non-toxic outer layer of fabric on the pillow
 • -Polyester Fiber Filling with no added chemical and no flame retardants.
 • -$109 (at time of posting this article)
 • -Additional covers available for $54-$74 (at time of posting this article)
 • -0-9 Months
 • -Cover and pillow are machine washable
 • -18 different colors or designs

Pros of the Snuggle Me Organic:

 • -100% Organic fabrics for the outer layer
 • -Entire pillow is machine washable and can easily fit in a standard washing machine.
 • -Lightweight, weighing 4lbs
 • -Customizable and removable cover
 • -Typically high resale value at between 50-70% of original value
 • -No incidents regarding infant injury have ever been reported to the CPSC in the 13 years they’ve been in business

Cons of the Snuggle Me Organic Baby Lounger:

 • -Price, it is more expensive than many similar loungers on the market
 • -Size, it is designed to be used for less than a year and babies who grow faster than others may outgrow it very quickly
 • -Organic material, this can be considered a con because it can naturally vary in color so matching colors can be challenging
 • -Durability, again the organic material may not be as durable and long lasting as synthetic competitors.

My personal experience with the Snuggle Me Organic

I have owned the same snuggle me organic for 5 years now. I plan to use it with my 3rd baby and it has worked well for us. It has held up great and I personally love how soft and flexible it is for baby. I also love that it has fit in both washing machines I’ve owned over the past 5 years.

The DockATot Review

About the DockATot Company

The DockATot is a luxury baby lounger designed for use with babies aged 0-8 months old. It can be used for lounging, playing, tummy time and even diaper changes. The DockATot founder, Lisa Kotsianis, designed the first baby lounger for her own personal use in 2006 when she had her first baby. She then began developing them commercially and has grow into an international brand. The DockATot brand has branched into selling numerous other baby items including pillows, bassinets and clothes.

What is the DockATot?

The DockATot lounger is developed and manufactured in Europe. It comes different sizes one being a smaller size called the DockATot deluxe and a larger size called the DockaTot Grand for older babies and toddlers.

It is designed to create a womb-like environment for the baby by providing a soft padded bottom to lay on and firm supportive padded sides to hug the baby.

It is made in Europe with Oeko-Tex certified fabric meaning it is free of harmful chemicals used to produce fabrics. It comes in a variety of colors and has lots of accessories that can be added on to increase the functionality of the DockATot. They also state they use breathable fabric as well as hypoallergenic fabrics and materials.

It measures from most outward edge to outward edge 29 inches (73.7 cm) L x 18 inches (45.7 cm) with the buckle closed.

It can be used with the buckle closed for a traditional lounger shape that hugs baby all around or with the buckle open to give leg space for diaper changes, tummy time or a leg room for baby.

The DockATot goes through extensive testing for durability, toxins, performance, colorfastness, and harmful materials like phthalates and heavy metals. They even test their packaging to ensure every element that touches your DockATot is safe for your baby and home.

Key features and benefits

 • Oeko-Tex certified for all fabric and materials
 • 100% cotton shell (cover/exterior)
 • 100% polyester inner tub and inner pad
 • Each component is washable either by machine or hand.
 • Weighs 5lbs
 • Customizable covers
 • $195 (at time of posting this article)
 • $75-$105 Additional covers (at the time of posting this article)
 • Specialized accessories such as a sun cover, toy arch and diaper changing pad are available for purchase

Pros of the DockATot + Deluxe:

 • Oeko-Tex fabric is considered one of the top certifications for non-toxic fabrics in the industry
 • Can be used with the buckle or without for ultimate baby comfort
 • Accessories make it even more customizable for all environments
 • 20 different patterns, colors and designs
 • Portable, compact design
 • Base comes with a padded mat
 • Great resale value, selling at 50%-70% of original value

Cons of the DockATot + Deluxe:

 • Not made with organic materials
 • Price: one of the most expensive on the market
 • Size, because of the nature of the product you are intended to use it for less than one year which makes it very expensive for the time you have it
 • Washing is a challenge due to some parts needing hand wash only, some needing hot water, some needing cold water and some needing warm water. It would be a multiple hour process to wash the entire pillow.
 • As recent as June 2022 DockATot received a violation notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for violating the Infant Product Sleep Rule.

My personal experience with the DockATot

I used one that my friend had for her baby when we went to visit. It was great quality, the pillow was firmer than the snuggle me organic and the fabric did not feel as buttery soft as the snuggle me. The pillow also did not feel as it cradled baby as much because the pad went under the pillow instead of scooping baby up. It felt slightly bulkier than the snuggle me but still very portable. I do believe I used a version that is no longer made and has since been upgraded but they still appear very similar.

Comparing the Snuggle Me Organic vs. DockATot lounger, main differences

Snuggle Me organic vs. dockatot lounger graphic

Price:

The DockATot is almost double the price of the Snuggle Me Organic. The covers for the DockATot are also almost double the price of the Snuggle Me Covers so this is an important consideration. Both loungers are also more expensive than similar products on the market.

Price Winner: Snuggle Me Organic

Durability:

The DockATot regularly submits their products to testing for fabric performance, seam strength, colorfastness, durability towards holes and tears as well. Snuggle Me Organic does use organic materials and does not seem to have the same intense testing standards as DockATot. Some reviews have mentioned they feel the Snuggle Me Organic does break down some with extended use.

Durability Winner: DockATot

Non-Toxic Standards:

The snuggle me organic uses 95% organic materials for their product. The cover is 100% organic cotton and not treated with flame-retardants or chemicals of any kind. The DockATot baby loungers are made with 100% cotton but it is not organic. The DockATot does use Oeko-Tex fabric which ensures they are free from toxins, harmful substances. Both baby loungers use high-quality materials that are great options for a non-toxic choice.

Non-Toxic Winner: Tie

Accessories:

The snuggle me organic does not have any accessories that can be added on. It is a very simple minimalist design that is made for families who are only looking for a baby lounger, not a multifunctional product. The Snuggle Me Organic does allow you to purchase an extra cover to use when washing, traveling or just give it a new look. The DockATot has numerous accessories that can be added on for an additional cost. They have a sun cover, mosquito net, toy arch, diaper changer and travel bag. If you are looking for something more versatile than just a lounger the DockATot is a clear winner here.

Accessories Winner: DockATot

Comfort:

The snuggle me organic fabric is so incredibly buttery and soft. I also love the design of the lounger because it does really cradle baby and create a little hammock like nest for baby to lounge in. The main drawback is the base of the snuggle me is a thin fabric layer with no additional padding. The DockATot is a bit firmer than the snuggle me and does not feel as cradle like but does have a padded base for additional comfort regardless of where you set it.

Comfort Winner: Tie, it depends on what aspect is important to you!

Washable Aspect:

You can toss the entire Snuggle Me Organic directly into the washing machine or just the cover if needed. You can also place it on low in the dryer to dry. The DockATot requires some more detailed guidelines to wash, the cover should be washed in warm water in a garment bag and hung dry, while the pad is hand wash only with an instruction to lay flat too dry. The inner sleeve is to be washing in cold water and the inner tub is to be washing in hot water and then tumble dried on low. As you can see the fact each part needs specific, separate detailed washing guidelines makes it a bit more time consuming to care for.

Washable Winner: Snuggle Me Organic

Safety:

The Snuggle Me Organic and DockATot both submit to testing, safety regulations and deem a safe environment for baby as the utmost importance. Snuggle Me Organic has not had an safety incidents reported to the company the CPSC, or Health Canada in their 13 years in operation. The DockATot has received notification on violations of safe sleep standards as most recent as June of 2022. They have also had 4 reports of incidents of death or injury regarding their product on saferproducts.gov.

Safety Winner: Snuggle Me Organic

Overall Winner:

Snuggle Me Organic is the overall winner between the two for me but you may have different priorities and wants in your baby lounger and the DockATot is loved by many families. I value comfort, ease of use and safety for my baby so the fact the snuggle me is super soft material that cradles baby was important. I also love that I can easily wash the whole thing quickly and easily without googling directions and the safety aspect is huge for me. I personally struggle with postpartum anxiety and value that the Snuggle Me Organic has been a safe space for babies for the last 13 years.

Let me know you thoughts on both loungers and which one you use for your family. The opinions in this article are of course based in my own research, experience and ability to analyze my findings.

Graphic stating less toxic paint options and listing options from post

General guidelines for safe paint options

 • water-based paint or water-based latex paint
 • natural paints made from natural ingredients such as clay and plant-based oils
 • chalk paint with low levels of VOCs and a durable, matte finish
 • old fashioned milk paint
 1. Water-based paint and water-based latex paints are a great eco-friendly choice because of their low levels of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), which means fewer fumes that could be harmful for people and the environment. Compared to oil-based paints, latex paint is considered non-toxic and safer to use.
 2. Natural paints are made from natural ingredients such as plant-based oils, minerals, and pigments, thereby avoiding any synthetic chemicals, VOCs or preservatives. Some of the common components of these paints include linseed oil, chalk and clay, making them safer for both the environment and human health.
 3. Chalk paint is typically considered safe to use around babies, because it is composed of all natural ingredients like calcium carbonate and water, which are low in toxicity. It’s important to properly prep the furniture before painting by ensuring it is free of any dirt, grease, or residue before painting. In my opinion a water-based, low-VOC (volatile organic compound) formula are best, since they won’t release harmful fumes into the air.
 4. Latex paint is safe and low in VOCs, while natural paints are completely free of chemicals, and chalk paint is easy to work with and dries to a durable finish. Be sure to also ensure that your chosen paint meets the safety standards set by the CPSC. Ultimately, the best paint for baby furniture will depend on your specific requirements.

How do you choose the best paints for your little ones room and furniture?

There are several things to consider when choosing a non-toxic paint for your baby’s crib, room or furniture. One of the biggest thing to look for is a low VOC (volatile organic compounds) or even zero-VOC paint option that doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals like lead or formaldehyde. You’ll want to ensure that the product meets the requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The CPSC has created standards for the paint used on children’s products such as cribs, to make sure they are free of lead and other hazardous substances. Per their guidelines, lead content must not exceed 90 parts per million (ppm) and formaldehyde must not exceed 0.1 parts per million (ppm). Additionally, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) emissions must abide by the CPSC or EPA standards. It is important to remember that the standards outlined by the CPSC can be subject to change, so it is recommended to double-check the CPSC website before making your choice.

While the CPSC is a great starting point in my opinion there are other factors I would consider as well. The CPSC is just the most basic requirements I would want my child’s furniture to abide by. I also like to look for one various certifications below. These certifications are recommended by the EPA as belonging to companies who choose to use less toxic chemicals in their products. I personally have several Green Seal certified products and feel safe using them in my own home.

The following certifications are given to companies and products who choose to use non-toxic and often eco-friendly materials. As with everything be sure to look at the product ingredients to ensure that they align with your personal preferences.

Certifications for non-toxic paint options

What makes traditional paint unsafe for children?

Traditional paint, also referred to as oil-based or alkyd paint, can be full of potentially hazardous ingredients, for instance:

 • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) – these chemicals become gases and may give rise to air pollution, reduce indoor air quality and pose a risk to human health. As these chemicals are gradually released into the air during the paint drying process, it is particularly important to use non-toxic paints when decorating items for children.
 • Heavy Metals – certain pigments used in paint can consist of lead, mercury, or cadmium, which are unhealthy for humans and the environment.
 • Formaldehyde – this preservative may cause breathing problems and is considered a carcinogen.
 • Petroleum-based solvents – they produce vapours that can irritate the eyes, nose and throat and have further health implications.
 • Lead – can severely impact brain development and cause delays in growth if inhaled or ingested in significant quantities

These are a few of the harmful substances often found in conventional paint. To reduce exposure to these detrimental components, select low-VOC or VOC-free paint items and read product labels thoroughly.

Can the harmful chemicals in paint be endocrine disruptors?

Yes many of the chemicals have been proven to be endocrine disrupters in both children and adults. Many of those chemicals interfere with the endocrine system and cause adverse health effects. Phthalates, BPA, lead and cadmium are a few of the biggest ones that can wreck havoc on adults but especially developing little ones. These heavy metals, which are found in paint pigments, have been linked to developmental problems, reproductive problems, and impaired immune system function. This is why it’s so important to find the least toxic version that will work for your family.

Is acrylic paint a good option for kids furniture?

Acrylic paint can be another ideal choice for painting furniture for kids, as it is generally safe and non-toxic. Unlike oil-based paints which can linger with a strong and unpleasant smell, acrylic paint is water-based and low on VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). It is also super easy to clean up with just soap and water. To make sure you choose the best option for your little ones’ furniture, remember to check and see if it meets (CPSC) safety standards or other standards that are most important to you and your family.

Acrylic paint is a great option for a variety of surfaces, including wood, metal, plastic, glass and masonry. It adheres well to wood and dries quickly, creating a hard finish that is resistant to chipping and scratching. On plastic and glass surfaces, the paint dries to a flexible finish that resists cracking and peeling. For outdoor painting, acrylic paint is ideal due to its durability and weather-resistance. It’s important to note that some surfaces may require a special primer for optimal adhesion. Make sure to take into account the specific needs and use of the baby furniture to select the perfect paint for the type of surface and intended use.

What is a safe DIY paint option?

Milk paint bag, milk paint can and milk paint color palet
Milk Paint

Old fashioned milk paint is a natural, centuries-old painting safe DIY paint option that’s known for its durability, versatility and ease of application. It’s made from a combination of milk proteins( casein), lime and pigments and is free from VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), making it a safe and non-toxic choice for furniture and other surfaces. Milk paint is especially popular for its distinctive chalky finish that can give a piece of furniture an ‘aged’ or ‘distressed’ look.

You can use it on a variety of surfaces, including wood, metal, glass and masonry, and it’s easy to blend with other colours to create custom shades and different colors. Just bear in mind that milk paint is a traditional product and may need some special handling or preparation to guarantee good adhesion and an even finish.

How do you make Old Fashioned Milk Paint?

There are lots of recipes online to try but a popular version is below.

Ingredients:

 • 1 cup of skim milk powder
 • 1 cup of warm water
 • 2 tablespoons of lime putty or hydrated lime
 • Natural pigments or food coloring (optional)

Directions:

First, whisk the skim milk powder and warm water together in a medium bowl until combined. Then slowly add the lime putty or hydrated lime while continuously whisking until the mixture is smooth. If you want, add natural pigments or food coloring to get the shade you like. After that, pour the paint into a container with a tight-fitting lid and let it sit undisturbed for 24-48 hours. Finally, give it a stir and use a brush or roller to apply it to whatever surface you’re painting. It’s worth noting that the consistency could vary depending on the type of milk powder and lime putty used, so you may need to experiment a bit to get the desired result.

It’s also important to note that this may not be as durable or last as long as commercial paint options and sealing with a non-toxic option is recommended.

Are all zero-VOC paints non-toxic?

It’s important to note that not all zero-VOC paints are necessarily considered safe or non-toxic. Despite containing very low or no levels of VOCs, which can be harmful to our health, some zero-VOC paints may include other less-than-ideal ingredients. For instance, they may contain heavy metals such as lead and synthetic elements which have not been sufficiently tested. To guarantee that you’re using a safe, non-toxic zero-VOC paint, look out for certifications from organizations like Green Seal or the EPA (environmental protection agency). This signifies that the paint has been evaluated for safety and meets environmental and health standards.

If I am painting an old piece of furniture myself with new paint, what steps should I take?

If you’re planning to paint an old piece of furniture yourself, these steps will help you to do it safely and successfully:

 • Start with preparation: Give the surface a good clean to get rid of any dirt, grime or oils. If there are any rough spots, sand them down, and fill any cracks or holes with wood filler.
 • Pick the right paint: Choose a non-toxic, low-VOC paint that is suitable for the surface you are working on – check the safety standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
 • Put on a primer: Apply a primer that is designed for the surface you are painting to help the paint stick better.
 • Time to paint: Use a brush or roller to apply the paint in thin, even coats. Allow each coat to dry completely before adding more.
 • Complete the project: Once the last coat of paint has dried, you may want to add a clear coat or sealer to protect the surface and increase the longevity of the paint.

Remember to work in a well-ventilated area and always wear protection gear like a respirator mask to protect yourself from dust particles.

Let me know which of these paint options you are considering swapping for conventional paints. Paint is such an easy way to change the entire feel of a room and choosing a safe option is always a good idea since it’s not something most people are typically swapping our constantly.

Looking for all the best non-toxic gifts for you little ones this year? I’ve got you covered! I broke this down into the different businesses and a summary of the options they offer. I obviously can’t list every toy everyone offers but linked all the sites so you can easily navigate to them. My hyper organized brain then wanted to break items down into categories for each area of gift giving and then price points and then my brain exploded. Just kidding I did decide after running through a ton of scenarios to keep it simple and just categorize based on brand. I really looked for brands that boast they use non-toxic paints, woods, and overall sustainable products for their consumers.

*This article may contain affiliate links which means I could get a small commission if you purchase using these links, this helps support my blog, time and efforts here but doesn’t cost you a thing!*

*As with all product recommendations I make please ensure you do your own research! Your non-toxic standards could differ from mine.

Kids

Best Non-Toxic Toys

Love Every

Love Every is by far the most recommended non-toxic, age appropriate toy brand I’ve come across. They sell kits for ages 0 to teenage years. They are delivered to directly to your home each month. They have multiple toys in each kit and you can even further customize by adding a book to the kits. They design their toys to further you child’s physical and mental development. They also use wood and non-toxic supplies in most of their products. The down side is it is a subscription kit that you get monthly which doesn’t necessarily fit in everyones budget. Check them out here!

The Tot

The tot is a great brand that puts safety and quality first and foremost in their products. They go as far to have their products tested for toxins, heavy metals and other toxic substances from an independent party, to help consumers rest assured they only sell safe, non-toxic products. While they have lots of different items on their site, they have a big toy section that is perfect for all ages. The have toys for pretend and dramatic play, costumes, stuffed animals, cars, climbing toys, play make-up, baby gyms and so much more. Check out all the great stuff here!

Earth Hero

Earth Hero is an all around great brand to support. Their mission is to support sustainable, non-toxic products and minority owned companies. Their website features a a ton of products beyond just toy from clothing and pet items to home decor and even zero waste products. The toys section is mostly for younger kids but it’s great to see a company aligning it’s self with moral, ethical and environmental values. They even have bath bombs and beauty products you can add to your order. Check them out by clicking here!

Organically OT

Organically OT offers beautiful toys that are nature-based, support creativity and mindfulness in kids. They have a lot of yoga blocks and breathing boards to promote mindfulness for kids. They also have a lot of nature based toys like this tree block set I have featured on this page. They also have a good amount of modeling clay, One thing to take note of is the product and company information appears to be limited. Many of the toys claim to be sustainable and use non-toxic water-based paints but without certifications its not a 100% guarantee. Check out all their products here!

Etsy

Etsy has so many options for non-toxic toys for kids. You do have to search a bit but here a few of my favorite Etsy makers. As with anything handmade the actually source of products can be hard but having toys that are solid wood is a really good start. Also makers who use non-toxic paints and glues which many people mention in their listings.

GoodEvasKids and AvenlurKids have lots of climbing toys, indoor playgrounds and larger toys that support gross motor development in kids. They state their toys are solid wood, non-toxic and safe for kids to play on for many years. These are great options especially if you’re in a really cold area for part of the year and going outside isn’t always the ideal option.

MamasPsPlaceLLC has some fine motor development toys for kids that are non-toxic Montessori based! She has kits you can bundle or just individual items. The necklaces you can paint are my favorite from her for sure!

Aero1Toys makes some great solid wood train and car sets. For sure go for the non-painted versions as they do notappear to use or state they use non-toxic paint in their products. If you’re worried about the glue involved as well this may not be the best choice as they also don’t state that its non-toxic either.

Let me know if I missed some of your favorite non-toxic brands that I can add to this list for everyone to love and support! I also am making a another gift guide that is focused on experiences rather than items if more stuff and clutter isn’t speaking to you this year, which I completely understand!

If you are looking for another gift guide I made a valentines one that has a ton of DIY low cost options if that you should check out!

Valentine’s day is just around the corner and the holiday seems to become more commercialized and gift focused every year. I absolutely am not anti-gift giving but the pressure to constantly give, what is often promoted as expensive or lavish gifts can be overwhelming. I also vowed to strive towards a more minimalist lifestyle this year (you can read more about that on my resolutions post here) so giving a gift just because its the expectation, doesn’t really fit that lifestyle. I wanted to put together a list of books that focus more on feelings, love, self-love, mindfulness and compassion than solely gift giving! So if you couldn’t already tell from my little soap box I’ll add this little disclaimer that many of these are not focused specifically on Valentine’s Day but rather promoting the feeling of love and teaching kids compassion!

In My Heart (Hardcover) by Jo Witek

In My Heart Book

This is part of a mini series and does a great job at teaching kids how to express emotions. This specific book talks about feelings from the heart so it goes with love theme for sure! It has fun illustrations and higher level vocabulary to help push your kids to learn new words.

Love Monster by Rachel Bright

Love Monster Book

This is a cute book with a story line that keeps kids hooked. It helps teach kids empathy as they hear about how the monster isn’t cute and furry like all the other creatures. There are also some craft activities that go with this book. We’ve made a little love monster with playdoh and googly eyes!

This Is Not a Valentine by Carter Higgins

This book is really sweet and teaches that we can show people we love them and care in other ways. It doesn’t have to be just on valentines with glittery gifts and such. I love the moral, illustrations and relatable story elements for kids!

Love From Crayons by Drew Daywalt

Love From Crayons Book

This is another book from a small but growing series. This entire series is filled with relatable illustrations for kids and super funny. This book has each crayon make a statement focused on their color and what love is. It keeps kids engaged and thinking critically about the true meaning of love!

I Am Love: A Book of Compassion by Susan Verde

I Am Love Book

This is part of a larger series about teaching various feelings, skills and ideas centered on mindfulness. The message is great for kids and talks about how to care/love others and be mindful to loving ourselves too. It also teaches some yoga poses that are centered on opening the heart charka. I highly recommend adding this to the mix because it focuses on the feeling of love and compassion and gives some movement to go along with it!

I Love You and Cheese Pizza by Brenda Li

I Love You and Cheese Pizza Book

This a silly book about a pig who thinks he only loves pizza. He has tons of silly mishaps and comical things occur throughout the story where he learns the true meaning of love. The humor in this one can really capture the attention of kids who aren’t feeling the lovey holiday stuff!

Love: A Story About Who You Truly Are

This is the ultimate self-love book! This book is a great one to read not just around Valentine’s Day but year round! It helps remind kids that they are special regardless of what others think. It promotes the idea we are all unique and we should love ourselves just the way we are.

Love Comes In Many Ways by Terry Pierce

Love Can Come in Many Ways Book

This book focuses on the different ways animals and people can show love. It’s a board book as well which is great for little hands that aren’t always gentle. I like that it is fairly short and to the point but you can have good discussions about what each sentence and illustration means.

That What Love Is by Hannah C. Hall

Thats What Love Is Book

This book is based on the bibles “love chapter,” corinthians. It follows the same pattern of love is patient, love is kind ect. The illustrations are super cute and the story it’s self is short enough that you can have discussions about what each phrase means.

So there you have it! A list of books that promote love, teach what love is and have plenty of opportunities to have discussions with your little ones about love! I like that these can be read year round to keep the love positivity around all the time!

What are some of your favorite Valentine’s books? Do you prefer ones that teach the more traditional idea of creating and giving? We have lots of those too and I promise I still give gifts! If you’re looking for a more meaningful gift idea check my post on easy DIY gifts you can create!

So if you’ve read back to a my new year resolution article then you know that minimalism and less stuff is on my list of goals for this year. So a lot of this gifts center around an activity or small scale gift. As a Mom of two finding things that are easy and budget friendly a necessity!

Birthdays and Christmas I like to typically give nice store bought gifts but Valentines is one that I have fun getting creative with. I truly enjoy making cards, crafts and gifts for my loved ones, after all they just got a cool bought gift less than 2 months ago!

Here is my list of top 10 Valentines Gifts for you to create and give.

Bird Feeder

This is a really awesome gift, especially for grandparents, parents or nature lovers. This gifts allows the person who receives it to enjoy watching a variety of birds come into their little corner of the world. I have two options here for you depending on your time and skill level.

Option 1 Pine Cone Bird Feeder

This is by far my favorite option. It ticks all the boxes for me. Eco-friendly, budget-friendly and easy! I like that I can go on a nature walk with my kids with the idea of finding the PERFECT pinecone to create a gift for someone we love. Then we get to come home and finish our creation.

Materials

Pinecone, peanut butter, bird feed (or sunflower seeds) and a string.

Step 1- Find your PERFECT Pine cone! The key here is to find one that isn’t too dried out or you’ll have it breaking and flaking everywhere!

Step 2- Tie your string onto the top of your pinecone! If you don’t do it now, you’ll be a messy peanut butter mess trying to do it at the end.

Step 3- Take your pinecone and cover it in peanut butter. A spoon is great to help kind of push the peanut butter into the various spots of the pinecone.

Step 4- Sprinkle seeds all over pinecone.

Step 5- Gift your pinecone! I recommend wrapping in parchment paper to help reduce the peanut butter getting messy everywhere but newspaper or even popping in a gift bag would be ok!

Option 2 Crafted Bird Feeder

So this is another option where you focus more on your creativity and decorate an actual bird feeder from mostly pre-made item. This is an awesome kit because its super simple to “build” your feeder and it has everything you need to create your gift. The only thing I don’t love about the kit is the paint isn’t non-toxic so for little little ones you really need to be careful. Paint, paintbrushes, jewels, and string are all included! The kit comes with 2 feeders and is currently priced at 12.99 with a 20% coupon available! Click here to grab yours!

You can also opt for these bird feeders that aren’t in a kit and add on this kid-friendly non-toxic paint option. I love that this paint set is fairly small so it won’t add a ton of clutter to your home or go old before you can use it!

Don’t forget your bird feeder! This is 6lb bag for just $6.97 that you can gift as well, so they can enjoy your gift for a bit longer! Click here to grab a bag!

Sugar Scrub

A sugar scrub is easy, cheap and a great gift for someone who enjoys pampering or self care! You can make this as low-cost, budget friendly as you want! You can reuse jars you already have or even use low-cost glass Tupperware to house your scrub! I personally love these beauty jars from Amazon. They are glass so totally non-toxic and eco-friendly. At just $16 for a two pack, they really add a feeling of luxury to your gift and as a bonus, you can keep one for yourself!

I also really like these wide mouth hinge-lid mason jars as well! These would be better if you are making a bunch for co-workers, friends or a group of people! 12 for $24 is also a great price and they come with super cute labels!

I am personally a total coffee lover so my go to scrub is a coffee sugar scrub but this is easy to modify!

Perrys Plate is where I got my original recipe from! She has an awesome site with tons of recipes for the sugar scrub with lots of Holiday versions too!

 • 2 Cups Brown Sugar (I also really love using raw sugar or coconut sugar)
 • 1 Cup Coconut Oil
 • 1 Tablespoon Unused Coffee Grounds

Melt your oil and mix it together with your sugar and grounds! Walaah (thats supposed to be a sound)!

You can add in a 1/2 tsp vanilla extract to keep with the coffee vibes. You could also nix the coffee all together and add in some lavender essential oil drops or lemon essentials oil drops! Really tailor to who you’re giving it to and add their favorite smells!

I personally use my scrub in the shower a few times a week to keep my skin exfoliated and soft. I also use it on my lips when they get super chapped and it works so well!

DYI Bath Bomb

This is another gift for some who enjoys a good pamper session. This is also a really fun gift for someone with kids because it makes for a really fun bath time. Traditional bath bombs are typically full of lots of yucky stuff like dye, fragrance and other skin irritants. This DYI version is safe and even skin soothing!

There are tons of recipes on the web but my go to is below! The most important being to not touch the citric acid with bare hands, gloves are the way to go when mixing it in! Citric acid sounds a bit scary and me telling you to not touch it with your bare hands its also probably coming off as alarming but don’t worry it really is a safe ingredient and the one you need to get that fun bath bomb FIZZ! Ok so now that I’ve got you questioning if this is actually safe (it is!) let’s get to the recipe!

You’ll need the ingredients of course but also 2 bowls, a pair of reusable gloves, a mold tray and refrigerator

 • 4 Ounces Baking Soda
 • 2 Ounces Citric Acid
 • 2 Ounces Corn Strach
 • 2 Ounces Epsom Salt
 • 2 Teaspoons Water
 • 5-10 drops of an Essential Oil (Lavender is my fav and good for your skin)
 • 2 Teaspoons Vegetable Oil (Olive, Coconut work great)
 1. Mix the baking soda, corn starch, and epsom salt together in a bowl.
 2. Mix the water, essential oil and vegetable oil in another bowl.
 3. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and mix REALLY well. You can mix with your hands here but again I recommend gloves.
 4. Add the citric acid and again combine really well with your hands in gloves.
 5. Put your ingredients into you mold.
 6. Refrigerate for at least 24 hours and walaah 🙂
 7. Drop in your bath and enjoy!

These molds are my favorite because they are flexible and easy to work with but also make pretty shapes!

DYI Jewelry

This is probably my favorite gift on this list! Hear me out, I’m not talking plastic bead jewelry on a pipe cleaner that is slightly too tight for your wrist or neck. I’m thinking beautiful items made with real crystals and gems! You can be endlessly creative with it and it’s fairly inexpensive! Each time I put a piece of jewelry I think of where it’s came from and would love to receive something handmade! So there are a ton of different kits you can get and I’ll show you a few of my favorite in a moment.

I personally went to my local crystal shop and bought a ton of different crystals to make earrings, necklaces and bracelets. I was pregnant at the time and used a lot of moonstone which is thought to be protective and healing during pregnancy. I also grabbed some quartz which is just a go to good vibe crystal for me! Pictured below are similar to the ones I created myself but these are actually from an Etsy shop, linked here!

This kit allows you to make something similar with natural gem stones too! It has Amethyst and Lapiz Lazuli which are two of my absolute favorite gems. It’s a great price at $25 and has all the tools you need to make lots of earrings, necklaces and bracelets!

This next one is a big step above from the plastic bead kit I am very familiar with! This is a kid charm bracelet kit and looks super cute! It’s only $14 and comes with everything you need to make cute necklaces and bracelets.

A Card

I know your like seriously, I didn’t need an internet search for a card! This is honestly the easiest gift and truly appreciated by the receiver. Spending your time creating a beautifully decorated card and writing a lovely message about the receiver is a guaranteed win! Be sure to tell them something you love about them, your relationship about them and a future item like you can’t wait to see them, travel with them, enjoy a coffee date whatever!

My favorite is still the old school card with the lace foil doily thing but again this world is your oyster on creativity here.

For kids you can cut a sponge in heart shape, dip in paint and let them go to down making a collage of paint stamped hearts!

What are you planning on creating for Valentine’s Day? I really love creating gifts from the heart and love that my kids are getting old enough so I can create this tradition with them!

5 Best All Natural and Non-toxic Candy Brands https://thekindanaturalmom.com/5-best-all-natural-and-non-toxic-candy-brands/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=5-best-all-natural-and-non-toxic-candy-brands https://thekindanaturalmom.com/5-best-all-natural-and-non-toxic-candy-brands/#comments Mon, 17 Jan 2022 05:13:30 +0000 https://thekindanaturalmom.com/?p=137 Read more

Candy is traditionally full of added-sugar, dyes and various chemicals. One 5oz package of gummy bears has 63 grams of sugar which is 4 times the recommended daily intake for kids and almost 3 times the recommended intake for adults.

It also contains some ingredients such as yellow 5, red 40, and blue 1 which have been found to be contaminated with benzidine or other carcinogens.

On top of all that yuck, sugar is also know to cause serious dental issues in both children and adults! It also causes your skin to age prematurely making you look older than you actually are! So lets agree that slowing our roll on the amount of sugar we ingest is a good idea!

Giving up candy would suck though so instead of kicking candy to the curb, why not just choose smart brands that use non-toxic, real ingredients!

So inserting a little disclaimer here guys, this stuff is still candy! Some of it has ingredients that while non-toxic, they are manufactured in a lab. So obviously if you want something totally healthy, eat a piece fruit, am I right?

So remember, kinda natural Mama here is always going to choose to have some candy here and there.

Here is my go to list for healthy low or no sugar, all natural candy!

*This post may contain affiliate links which means I may receive a commission if you buy! This helps support me to continue developing resources for you and I am truly appreciative, thank you!*

Zollie Candy

Zollie Candy is an awesome small business created by a Dad and daughter duo! Their candy is vegan, all-natural, and sugar-free. They also have a charitable organization that educates students on tooth decay and gives back to the community! Bundle with 6 or more products to save 20%. This candy has good ingredients, gives back to charity and tastes amazing, win-win-win! You can grab some treats for as low as $3.50 or get big bundles and save!

Essential Candy

These are like the superhero’s of candy! They are fun candies but also target different health ailments with all natural ingredients and essential oils. They also have a CBD line that you can order candy from as well. These do also contain sugar but it is all organic and only 2g per candy. Heck you probably need these for when you eat too much of all the other candy! You can grab a bag for between $12-15 dollars from their website.

Beyond Good

Beyond Good makes some bomb chocolate but they also are doing a ton of humanitarian work to fix the broken industry that surrounds chocolate. Cocoa farmers are paid wages that perpetually keep them in overly and beyond good has vowed to pay 3x the industry standard and work to create healthy lasting relationships with their farms. You can grab a 6 bar gift set for 24.99 if you double up and spend over $40 you get free shipping too!

Smart Sweets

img

This brand is woman created and owned! Their phrase is kick sugar, keep candy which I can totally get down with! All their products do contain sugar but its a minimal amount, I am all about moderation and their products let you enjoy without that massive hit of sugar like traditional candy. They also contain high quality, well researched ingredients! They are pretty easy to locate and even in your local target. Prices for a package start at just under $3 a bag.

Yum Earth

This brand is also really good and easy to find! I’ve tried many of their products and regularly use their peppermints for after meals or upset stomach! They are sold in a ton of local places making them a quick grab if you’re short on time! They have organic ingredients, are vegan and contain no artificial coloring. I did include this brand as last because they do have moderately high sugar at closer to 3/4g for a piece of the candy. Yum earths products start around $4 a bag and go up for different things.

I strive to consistently make better choices about products, food and my overall lifestyle. A big part of this for me is reading actual research from peer reviewed sources to ensure that I provide as accurate information as possible!

This is a study called the toxicology of food dyes which discusses their finds on various food dyes regularly used today. Click here for the link if you’d like to read to more!

Which brand did you try or do you have any go to brands you like?
