The benefits of lemon water and apple cider vinegar (ACV) do overlap some. Both contain acetic acid at varying levels which is responsible for many of the health benefits. Despite the overlap, there are certain differences between them.
Lemon water can help with hydration by increasing fluid intake and maintaining hydration levels. It is also believed to improve skin health by boosting collagen synthesis and reducing oxidative stress. The lemon pulp has lots of these benefits so consider using it in your water or recipes.
There are also a lot of health benefits of apple cider vinegar, it can regulate your blood sugar level and improve insulin sensitivity to aid in weight loss by reducing appetite and promoting fat burning. It may also improve heart health by decreasing cholesterol levels and reducing high blood pressure.
Both apple cider vinegar (ACV) and lemon water can pose a potential harm to tooth enamel due to their acidic nature. However, ACV is generally more acidic than lemon juice, meaning that it may have a greater likelihood to erode tooth enamel.
ACV typically has a pH ranging from 2.8 to 3.0, while the pH of lemon juice ranges from 2.0 to 2.6. Since the pH scale is logarithmic, each incremental decrease in pH represents a tenfold increase in acidity. Thus, ACV is approximately ten times more acidic than lemon juice. When acidic beverages come into contact with tooth enamel, they can soften and weaken it, making it susceptible to erosion over time.
To avoid or reduce the risk of tooth enamel erosion, it’s recommended to consume acidic drinks like ACV and lemon water in moderation, avoid swishing or retaining them in the mouth for prolonged periods, drink them through a straw to lessen contact with teeth, rinse the mouth with water after consuming them, and maintain proper oral hygiene practices such as frequent brushing and flossing.
Due to the acidic content of both drinks there doesn’t appear to be any benefit over ACV or lemon water on an empty stomach.
There are some still individuals who believe that drinking ACV or lemon water first thing in the morning without eating anything can aid in digestion and enhance energy levels. However, these claims currently lack sufficient scientific evidence, and further research must be conducted to validate them.
On the flip side, consuming acidic beverages such as lemon water or ACV on an empty stomach can heighten the chances of tooth enamel erosion and stomach problems. This is because without food, these acidic drinks can come into direct contact with the stomach lining, which may cause irritation, inflammation or ulcers for certain individuals.
Furthermore, it’s important to keep in mind that everybody’s body responds differently to various foods and drinks. What may help one person may not necessarily have the same effect on another. If you’re contemplating drinking ACV or lemon water on an empty stomach, it’s recommended to start with a small amount and slowly increase dosage over time to monitor its effects on your body. Additionally, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare professional before implementing any significant modifications to your diet or daily routine, particularly if you have any underlying health conditions.
ACV and lemon water both contain antioxidants that can fight free radicals, but the quantity and types of antioxidants they offer do differ.
ACV includes polyphenols, a type of antioxidant with potential health benefits, such as lowering the risk of chronic diseases, including heart disease. However, the quantity of polyphenols ACV contains may vary based on the brand, age and production method.
Lemons are a rich source of vitamin C, which is an influential antioxidant that can defend cells from oxidative stress and inflammation. Vitamin C is also responsible for wound healing, collagen synthesis, and immune function.
While both ACV and lemon water may provide some antioxidant benefits, their effectiveness in this area will depend on various factors, including the type of antioxidant, concentration, and bioavailability.
The scientific evidence on the effectiveness of both apple cider vinegar (ACV) and lemon water in preventing or treating kidney stones is fairly limited. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest that citric acid found in lemons and lemon juice may increase urine volume and urinary citrate levels, reducing the concentration of stone-forming substances in urine. However, further research is required to confirm these findings in humans.
Some initial research also indicates that ACV’s acetic acid content may help dissolve kidney stones. However, there is currently isn’t enough evidence to support using ACV as a treatment for kidney stones.
It’s important to note that kidney stones are a complicated ailment with various causes, and treatment and prevention plans should be customizable based on individual requirements and medical history. If you have concerns about kidney stones or any other health issue, it’s important to discuss them with a healthcare professional for tailored advice.

Apple cider vinegar and lemon water can both be a part of a healthy diet. It is important to think about how you consume them but the most popular way is to simply add it to a large glass of water.
Both can be used in salad dressings, marinades, tea’s and added too recipes for sautéed vegetables. You can use them to pickle vegetables as well or even make a smoothie.
The best way to consume it is truly the way you enjoy it the most. Another great way I use lemon is in warm water in the morning or smoothies. I love using apple cider vinegar in an easy cucumber dressing with salt, pepper and a tiny bit of raw honey.
Ingredients:
Instructions:
Notes: Some variations you can try include adding a pinch of salt or a natural sweetener like honey or maple syrup to enhance the flavor. You can also experiment with adding other ingredients like herbs (such as mint or basil), spices (like ginger or turmeric), or fruits (such as strawberries or cucumbers) to customize the taste and nutritional benefits of your lemon water.
You can also try warm lemon water but of course test the temperature and add the lemon juice after heating.
Ingredients:
Instructions:
You can also customize this recipe by adding other ingredients such as ginger, turmeric, or lemon juice for added flavor and health benefits.
Notes: You can use cold water or warm water if you want.
Let me know what way you plan on using lemon water and apple cider vinegar! For me I use them both regularly in different ways. I make sure that I mix up the ways in which I consume them to mitigate some of the negative effects such as consumption on an empty stomach and tooth enamel erosion.

Cassia cinnamon and Ceylon cinnamon are the two most popular and studied cinnamon varieties on the market. There are actually over 200 varieties of cinnamon but we utilize very few.
Cinnamon comes from the inner bark of trees belonging to the Cinnamomum genus which are native to Sri Lanka. To harvest it they strip the bark and let it dry.
Cinnamon oil is made from steam distillation of the leaves, twigs and inner bark to release the essential oil from it.
Cinnamon is often touted as a health food and comes in many forms. We consume ground cinnamon, cinnamon supplements, cinnamon tea, cinnamon essential oil and cinnamon sticks are all popular methods for consumption methods for cinnamon.
There are many general health benefits of cinnamon consumption.
-Anti-inflammatory properties; It may aid in reducing inflammation in the body and may lower the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Pub Med Study
-Reduction in joint pains due to the anti-inflammation properties
-Antioxidants, that can protect the body from damage caused by free radicals and aid in minimizing the risk of chronic diseases. NCBI Study
-Ability to increase insulin sensitivity which may help lower blood sugar levels, particularly for individuals living with diabetes or insulin resistance NCBI Study
-Can contribute to better heart health by decreasing inflammation, lowering high blood pressure, and reducing bad cholesterol levels Pub Med Study
-Natural antimicrobial properties that enable it to fight against bacterial and fungal infections NCBI Study
-Help improve cognitive function, memory, and focus Pub Med Study
As with anything, even natural foods, there can of course be risks to cinnamon consumption. Many people including pregnant woman could experience side effects from even minimal consumption of cinnamon. Cinnamon can cause;
-Allergic reactions which can result in symptoms such as skin rashes, hives, or breathing difficulties Article detailing cinnamon allergy
-Liver damage when consumed in high doses, especially if you have liver disease or if you are taking medication that affects liver function NCBI Study
-Irritation of the mouth and throat
-Can act as a blood thinner due to the presence of coumarin, which can increase the risk of bleeding, particularly in individuals taking blood-thinning medication NCBI Study
-Harmful side effects when combined with certain medications such as blood thinners NCBI Study
Yes, multiple reputable sources state, cinnamon can lead to miscarriage if consumed in large quantities. A pregnant woman should exercise caution or consider stopping consumption when consuming cinnamon, especially supplements, oils, or other concentrated varsities that can deliver too much cinnamon. Of course you should always consult with your preferred medical professional for any and all medical guidance related to your health or pregnancy.
Several studies have suggested that there is some scientific evidence that cinnamon could have uterine-stimulating properties which might cause contractions and miscarriage in high doses and specifically in early pregnancy or the first trimester of pregnancy. Dr. Nadkarni Purinma Kishore states cinnamon is actually used in other countries as a natural way to induce miscarriage for woman. Natural Miscarriage Statement
One study conducted on rats and published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology showed that cinnamon may stimulate the uterus and increase the risk of miscarriage. It was performed on rats only and the implications for humans are unknown but could be similar.
Another study in the Journal of Herbal Pharmacotherapy reported that when pregnant rats were given cinnamon bark extract, it increased their uterine contractions. The doses administered are far higher than those typically ingested by humans as a spice and again performed only in rats.
These studies show enough evidence in my opinion to avoid large amounts of cinnamon in your pregnancy. The good news is that pregnancy is only 9 months long so you don’t have to go without if you’re a huge cinnamon fan for long. I personally choose to do anything and everything I can to bring my baby here safely even if it may not actually make a difference, like in the case of cinnamon consumption.
I personally consumed small amounts of cinnamon during my pregnancy in bakery products but did not do any regular consumption of cinnamon or supplementation of any kind. I will note I was in good health and not experiencing any health issues. I also had a healthy pregnancy but still ran everything by my OBGYN if I was every unsure of safety or if it was a good idea to do something.
Leading a healthy lifestyle and reducing exposure to harmful substances/toxins can reduce your risk of miscarriage. Unfortunately miscarriage can just happen without any known cause and at no fault to the mother.
Reducing toxins in beauty products. Toxins such as BHA, parabens, phthalates and other common ingredients have been shown to increase the risk of miscarriage. Check out my non-toxic beauty guide for safe swaps on your favorite products.
Using plastic food containers to reheat food can increase exposure to toxic chemicals such as BHA that can increase risk. Switch to glass containers or put your food on a glass plate to reduce risk.
Chemicals in household products have been linked to increased risk of miscarriage and fetal abnormalities. Simple cleaners like this one I detail how to make here can be effective and are completely safe for you and future baby!
Toxic chemicals in food can cause adverse effects for your fertility and pregnancy. Consider reducing the amount of processed food and food additives you utilize for optimal pregnancy health.
Please remember that some pregnancies are not viable and the body naturally remedies this through miscarriage. Regardless of the situation or cause a miscarriage is very upsetting and you should ensure you take the time needed to heal both physically and mentally.

Finding the best non-toxic and eco-friendly sippy cup for your little ones in todays market can be a challenge. I created this article to help you navigate the best sippy cups on the market that are eco-friendly, durable and less toxic than the traditional sippy cups you find in big box stores. I’ve also included some other products on this list to round out the kid friendly finds since most kids are using sippy cups for a short amount of time.
Traditional sippy cups are often comprised of plastic which can have harmful chemicals that leach into your little ones drinks as they consume them. Typically drinks that are staying cool do not have as much leaching but plastic cups are still a concern not only for health but also the environment.
We are producing so much plastic that our earth is filling with Microplastics. These Microplastics are seeping into our water supply and are even being found in the human blood supply and brain. They have been linked to autoimmune disease and even cancer. Anything we can do to reduce the use of plastic and especially short-lived plastic is a step in the right direction.
The other issue with traditional sippy cups is related to oral health. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends limiting and or stopping sippy cup use around 1 year of age. It states that prolonged use can lead to dental issues, tooth decay, and hinder oral motor skills necessary for correct development. https://www.aap.org/en-us/about-the-aap/aap-press-room/Pages/Sippy-Cups-May-Be-Harmful-to-Childrens-Teeth.aspx
BPA, Phthalates, Lead, PVC, heavy metals, and Polystyrene are all chemicals or materials used in the manufacturing of sippy cups. However, they have been linked to a range of serious health problems. BPA, for example, is a chemical used in polycarbonate plastics that are used in some sippy cups and has been linked to hormonal disruptions and developmental issues in children.
Meanwhile, Phthalates are known to affect hormone levels and can cause developmental problems. Lead can be found in some ceramic or painted sippy cups and can cause neurological problems and other health issues. PVC is a plastic material that releases toxic dioxins when not disposed of properly. Finally, some disposable sippy cups made from Polystyrene can release harmful chemicals when incinerated and are not biodegradable.
This bamboo sippy cup is perfect for transitioning to toddler but be aware they are not completely spill proof. Since they have a hole above the mouth hole to vent for air they will leak if tipped over. They are eco-friendly, food grade and have a minimalist design
The biggest complaint is they are not as durable as other bamboo cups and can crack easily when dropped.
This is an open regular cup that is great for little ones being monitored during a meal time or older kids. I personally didn’t let my child use open cups regularly at meals until 2 and then unsupervised until closer to 4 to save myself the mess! The design is a honey jar shape and silicone is food grade, FDA approved. It can be used to yogurts or other snacks too! The silicone is removable for cleaning as well.
The biggest complaint is the silicone liner makes the rim really thick and is an added challenge to learning how to use an open design cup. Others stated the honey jar design widens the bottom and may not be the best for little hands.
These are a great option for a transition from a bottle. They have a lid and straw but are not 100% spill proof. They are better than an open cup of course but you’ll still need catch spills quickly. They are non-toxic, food grade silicone and 100% sustainably harvested from bamboo. They are also very proactive in utilizing safe dyes, and avoiding harmful chemicals in their products and production.
The biggest complaint is the lid is not very secure which you can see in the pictures. It’s an easy pop on and off.
This is a great choice for a stainless steel option with a silicone straw. It is a tumbler style just like the larger adult versions. It’s made of non-toxic materials and the plastic lid is BPA free. All materials are labeled food grade and very durable.
Biggest complaint is that while the lids do pretty well and stay out for the most part they will come off if your child lifts the cup by the straw or drops it because they are not screw in.
I love this brand and it’s what I use the most in my house. They are made of stainless steel and food grade silicone. The best part is that they the most spill proof outside of the traditional sippy cups that I’ve found. The lid screws on so there is no popping off. The company is focused on eco-friendly safe products.
The biggest complaint is that people say they leak. This has not been my experience with this product as long as you use the silicone ring that is included with the cups.
These are stated to be unbreakable cups for kids and adults. They are 100% food grade 18/8 stainless steel. If your looking for a cup totally free of toxins and plastic this could be it but you give up the convenience of a spill-proof cup for kids.
The biggest complaint for these is the 8oz size is very small but 87% of people have this product 5 stars which is a great percentage of 5 star ratings.
The biggest complaint is they get super hot with hot liquids. You have to hold the silicone sleeve and even then it can still feel very hot, so if you’re planning on using them for that it may be best to look elsewhere.
Koodee’s commitment to the environment is in their process of making high quality products that stand the test of time and meet the highest safety standards. They utilize food grade stainless steel for the cup, a silicone base to protect the coating and a hard spout plastic lid. This is best used and marketed as a water bottle for kids but they also have larger sizes for adults if you want to match. They come in a variety of different colors and are 100% leak proof when closed.
The biggest complaint is the lid is not as durable as advertised. Many have had issues with leaking and damage with regular short-term use.
Pura Kiki is a 100% plastic-free sippy cup for babies and toddlers. It looks similar to a baby bottle but the top is made of a soft spout silicone that is actually interchangeable. It comes with a sippy style spout but you can put a baby bottle nipple, or any other drink type spout. It is make with food-grade silicone and metal grade stainless steel. They pledge to put sustainability first with their products by using safe non-toxic materials that are built to last and recyclable. Pura also makes a ton variety of kid friendly sippy cups and bottles if you need something small, larger or a different design.
The biggest complaint is that it dents easily when dropped. There are other versions that are more insulated and do not but this specific version that I linked is not heavily insulated and a lighter version.
Pura my-my is a 100% food-grade silicone sippy cup that is designed to be a toddler training cup. It is 100% plastic free and spill proof for little ones. It has a retractable straw but if you want a traditional spout they also have that version. The cup can also be used without the top as a open cup which makes it even more versatile.
The biggest complaint is that spills can still happen if the cup is squeezed hard or turned upside down from the straw.
This is another 100% silicone cup that is free of plastic. It is designed with easy-grip handles to make holding better for little ones and less likely they will drop since they can gain a better grip. It comes in a very minimalist design with various colors (muted/pastel) to choose from. Their product is BPA free, PVC, and phthalate free. It is made with food-grade silicone as well, which is critical when considering silicone options.
The biggest complaint is it can leak easily when kids pull on the straw or drop the cup.
Munchkin
Munchkin is a popular brand that typically makes traditional plastic products but is creating some more eco-friendly, non-toxic designs. I know many are against buying from companies that product toxic products but each dollar you spend is a vote and if companies see their eco-friendly non-toxic products outperforming their traditional ones it could lead to more eco-friendly products. This cup has ultra little for those extra small hands at just 4 ounces and the perfect transition from a bottle. It is not a leakproof lid but the top stays pretty well fit and the weighted base helps uncoordinated hands keep it upright. This is a sippy straw cup like many of the other silicone competitors and promotes correct oral development/use.
The biggest complaint is how small this cup is. So not actual defects just a little size but that also means little messes if anything gets spilled!
The Go Sili is a 100% silicone and 100% stainless steel munchkin miracle dupe. It has the same 360 degree drinking design that has a self-sealing silicone lid for when kids aren’t drinking. The safe, eco-friendly materials make it a better choice than the munchkin miracle 360 degree design. The stainless steel ring keeps the cup firm and strong.
The biggest issue I see is this product not being on amazon!
The Elk and Friends glass cups are what we use in my house for about 90% of our drink needs. Once my little one was old enough I even put breast milk in these for her to drink as we transitioned away from bottles. I love the durability and I personally prefer drinking from glass which is why this is my top choice. They are not spill proof but the straw has a stopper to keep it in the cup and the spills are slow so it’s not usually a massive mess. The lid screws on so there is not popping off and the sleeve is silicone so kids can get a good grip.
The biggest complaint on these is durability. They will break if thrown or dropped super hard. We have had 2 total break in the 2+ years of owning them and when the little glass jars do break they are in pretty large chunks so I did not have a hard time cleaning it up.
The green sprouts sippy cup is a great choice for little ones that like handles and prefer drinking from glass bottles instead of silicone, steel or plastic. They are an eco-friendly non-toxic design. They have a soft silicone straw that is vented for easy drinking and transitioning from a bottle. They have a few different colors available and replacement parts to order should you misplace on of the parts.
The biggest complaint is the durability and ease of breaking this either while cleaning or by a child dropping it.
The luca sippy cup is made of glass with a silicone sleeve and straw for drinking. It is a good size and the best choice if you want to start with handles and move to a no handle cup later on. The company uses a glass that is stronger than typical glass to help with durability but it does make it slightly heavy for your little ones.
The biggest complaint is they are not leak proof so they are best for older babies that can manage to keep them mostly upright. Like the Elk and Friends if they do tip the spill is slow moving but still something to consider.
The Hamarue is a great choice if you are looking for an all in one product to take you from newborn to toddler transition cups. It has a silicone coated glass base, removable handles and interchangeable tops to make it a nipple, traditional sippy cup lid or straw. The cups eco-friendly materials and design make it a great choice and the company is committed to testing for toxic substances making it one of the best non-toxic sippy cups on the market.
The biggest complaint is durability. The glass is easy to break and the silicone coating only does so much without an actual sleeve.
Have you tried any of these in your home? I feel like sippy cups are something that are easy to accumulate lots of because they break, get lost or wear out thanks to all day everyday use.
If you are looking for some other eco-friendly, non-toxic kid products be sure to check out my toy guide.
Brown sugar and maple syrup are both popular choices to use in for sweeteners in most homes. You are probably wondering if one is better than the other and whether you should ditch one all together. I personally use both prefer to opt for the more natural sweetener when possible. Here I am outlining all the pro’s and cons and for brown sugar vs. maple syrup, so you can make the choice that is best for you.
Maple syrup is produced by harvesting the sap of maple trees during late winter or early spring when the sap begins to flow. A hole is drilled into the tree and a spout or tap is inserted to allow sap to flow into a container. The sap is then boiled down to evaporate the water, and make a concentrated maple syrup.
The color of pure maple syrup determines its grade, the lighter syrups have a subtle flavor profile, while darker syrups exhibit a stronger, more complex flavor. The grading criteria can differ across nations, but typically, the grades fall under Grade A (Light Amber, Medium Amber, and Dark Amber) and Grade B.
The grading system for maple syrup varies in different countries.
In the United States, the grading system has been simplified and now consists of 4 grades which are based on taste and color.
Grade A Golden Color and Delicate Taste has a light color and subtle sweetness, making it ideal for topping pancakes and waffles. Grade A Amber Color and Rich Taste has a slightly darker color and a richer flavor that is good for cooking and baking.
Grade A Dark Color and Robust Taste is darker with a stronger, more pronounced maple flavor that is often used in cooking and as a topping.
Grade A Very Dark and Strong Taste is the darkest of all grades, and is used when recipes require an intense maple flavor.
Canada’s grading system is very similar to the U.S. because the U.S. probably modeled their new system after Canada’s.
Maple syrup has been found to have multiple health advantages when consumed in moderation as part of a well-rounded diet. Here are some possible health benefits of maple syrup:
Here’s a breakdown of the nutritional profile of one tablespoon of maple syrup (20 grams):
Maple syrup also contains small amounts of other vitamins and minerals, such as riboflavin (vitamin B2) and magnesium.
Maple syrup has a moderately lower GI of approximately 54 when compared to the GI of table sugar (sucrose), which is around 60-65.
This indicates that the rise in blood sugar levels caused by maple syrup will be more gradual as compared to table sugar. It is still sugar though, so its important to consume in moderation and be very mindful if you have an health issues.
In a typical 1/4 cup (60 ml) serving of maple syrup there are the following vitamins and minerals:
No, they are different types of sweeteners that are both derived from the tree sap of maple trees. Maple sugar is produced by converting maple syrup into a granulated powder.
This conversion involves heating the syrup and removing most of the water to produce a dense, sticky syrup. After pouring the syrup onto a flat surface and allowing it to cool and solidify, the resulting substance is crushed and ground into a fine powder.
No, water-soluble vitamins like riboflavin and pantothenic acid – main nutrients in maple syrup – are lost during the process of converting it into maple sugar due to heat sensitivity, resulting in less water and higher sugar content. This ultimately means more calories and carbohydrates could be added to your diet through maple sugar consumption.
Yes, maple syrup is a great substitute for white sugar and other traditional sugars. It has a lower glycemic index than many other sugars. Maple syrup is also a more natural and unrefined sweetener with more beneficial nutrients and antioxidants. Its unique flavor adds depth to various recipes, both sweet and savory. It is also an eco-friendly option, as it is produced in North America and doesn’t require the same transportation resources as sugarcane-derived sweeteners.
Despite it being one of the popular liquid sweeteners you can still use maple syrup in baked goods like you would a cup of sugar. You do this by reducing the liquid you add so if a recipe calls for 1/2 cup of milk reduce that to 1/4th and then if it calls for 1 cup of sugar you’ll add 2/3 cup of maple syrup. This can take some trial and error but I love using maple syrup when I bake.
Maple syrup is also a favorite for using as pancake syrup but should not be confused with other syrups that are labeled as pancake syrup because these are totally different. Those syrups despite having the super golden syrup color are typically full of artificial ingredients, chemicals and typical processed white sugar, corn syrup or light corn syrup. Be sure you are choosing 100% pure maple syrup when selecting your maple syrup. Real maple syrup is much more beneficial than the fact stuff but easy to get confused with the million other choices.
Brown sugar is made by mixing granulated white sugar with molasses. Molasses is a byproduct of sugar refining that results from boiling down sugar cane or sugar beets to form a syrup. As the syrup boils, the granulated sugar is extracted from it, and the remaining liquid is condensed into molasses.
Molasses is thick, sticky, and has a sweet taste that is similar to caramel. Brown sugar is formed by blending molasses with granulated white sugar in various amounts depending on the intended color and taste.
Light brown sugar has roughly 3.5% molasses, while dark brown sugar has roughly 6.5% molasses, and the molasses is mixed with the sugar until it is thoroughly combined, resulting in a moist, lumpy texture. The higher molasses content means a more rich flavor and darker color.
The glycemic index (GI) of brown sugar is approximately 64, which is considered a moderate GI value.
No, there is very little difference between light brown sugar and dark brown sugar. The different comes from the amount of molasses added I after processing which affects the overall flavor.
Brown sugar syrup is a sweet, syrupy liquid created by heating a mixture of brown sugar and water. The syrup’s thickness and consistency can be adjusted by varying the ratio of brown sugar to water. Because of its caramel-like flavor, brown sugar syrup can replace other liquid sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup in recipes where a more robust taste is preferred.
It can also be drizzled over pancakes, waffles, or French toast as well as used as a flavoring for coffee or other beverages. Brown sugar syrup can last for multiple weeks in the refrigerator if stored in an airtight container. As it chills, the syrup may thicken, but a tiny amount of water and heating can thin it out again.
Brown sugar syrup does not provide any different nutritional make-up or content than regular granulated brown sugar.
Maple syrup is the superior sweetener of choice. When looking at all categories it beats brown sugar in almost all of them.
Again maple syrup is better for you and your blood sugar overall so I like to try and use it when possible. However depending on what you are creating it can be challenging to use maple syrup in place of regular white sugar. Baked goods can prove very challenging to replace white sugar with a liquid sweetener as the results can change drastically.
So I would recommend using maple syrup for things like salad dressings, any liquid sweetener needs, marinades and things that are not baked. Baked goods are already challenging enough so that’s the one big thing I would use brown sugar in but I still recommend experimenting with maple syrup when you have the time!
Sweeteners like coconut sugar, raw sugar and agave nectar often come up as a good substitute for either of these. Coconut sugar would be my favorite of these. I personally use coconut sugar in my own baking, it has a lower GI index than regular sugar, brown sugar and maple syrup. It also still contains some vitamins and minerals. It comes in a granular form or sometimes referred to as sugar crystals.
Raw sugar is a form of sugar that is less processed than white sugar. It has large sugar crystals and a slightly darker color thanks to the reduced processing and stripping of all its natural properties. It is still very similar white sugar in terms of nutritional content, GI content and vitamins and minerals. It does contain slightly more vitamins and minerals but the difference is very minimal.
Agave nectar or agave syrup is the best choice for those looking for a low glycemic index sweetener or the best maple syrup substitutes that do not want to use zero sweetener chemicals. Agave has a GI of just 17 making it a great choice and it has a great flavor that works well I many different kinds of recipes.
Every sweetener mentioned on this list should be available at big chain supermarkets. Brown sugar and maple syrup should be easy to find at almost all grocery stores. Coconut sugar and agave are gaining popularity and showing up in more stores. If you are interested in purchasing any of the sugars mentioned Amazon is always a great choice to use for things you can’t find close to where you live.
No, pure maple syrup is significantly more expensive than brown sugar. It costs more to produce maple syrup and it often has to travel farther to the selling location.
You can store most the sweeteners mentioned in this article at room temperature. I personally prefer to store my maple syrup in the refrigerator because its recommended on the bottle and my house gets kinda hot something down here in the south! Plenty of people store theirs at room temperature as well so the choice is really up to you!
Professional health organizations do not really recommend specific type of sugar choice but an overall guideline to reduce your overall sugar intake.
Sugar is a common ingredient in basically everything we consume today. It’s important that despite what you choose as your sweetener of choice to limit the amount you consume. An increased intake is linked to multiple chronic diseases and health issues.
If you’re looking for another great all natural sweetener be sure to check out my post on Mānuka honey. Mānuka honey is a powerhouse sweetener with science backed evidence of numerous health and healing benefits.
]]>Fresh air is one of the top things I am worried about in my home for myself and my family. We spend hours inside each day and night so it’s important that we are breathing as clean of air as possible. I also have a home full of kids, pets and lots of kitchen smells to add to the air. Finding non-toxic air fresheners is not the easiest so I wanted to share the best non-toxic all natural wall plug-in and other air fresheners on the market. As with anything there are some downsides to even natural plug-in air fresheners so you have to determine what is most important to you.
The good news is there are several non-toxic options to use as air fresheners for your home. The bad news is there is only one product I found comfortable recommending as a non-toxic wall plug-in. The rest of the plug-in products I researched had ingredients I’m not comfortable stating are non-toxic because they have some scientific data showing they can indeed cause long-term health issues and are classified as synthetic fragrances.
As with anything “natural” or non-toxic be sure to check the ingredient list to make sure the ingredients align with lifestyle. Many companies label their products as “clean” and containing only natural fragrances but its often marketing to get you to think you’re making a better choice.
It’s possible their products are slightly less toxic but many companies I found were still using products like Eugenol, an often synthetic chemical fragrances that can cause skin irritation and potentially hormone disruption. There were also using Geraniol which has similar effects to Eugenol. Both these chemicals have been found to be safe by both the FDA and EU in small amounts but are both noted as potential allergens so I prefer to avoid them.
Scent Fill is the best non-toxic wall plug-in option. Scent fill is essentially just like the conventional wall plug-ins but completely non-toxic. All you do is pick a scent pod, plug it in and your ready to transform the smell of any room. It is VOC free (minus the essential oils that contact VOC’s as listed above), can last up to 45 days and has 1100 5 star reviews on amazon.
I love that I can actually read the ingredients list in each of their products, about 95% of which are essential oils. This is essentially a tiny essential oil diffuser but all the different scents are prepackaged in scent pod refills that you just plug in and enjoy. You can by a kit with the refillable plug hub, just the scents, or just the hub separately to meet whatever your needs are.
Traditional air-fresheners are full of synthetic fragrances that smell wonderful but can be very toxic for your health. They typically have hundreds of different harmful chemicals that have been directly linked to allergies, respiratory problems and indoor air pollution. Pregnant women should be especially concerned about traditional air-fresheners due to their potential to cause reproductive issues.
Synthetic fragrances are considered a trade secret and therefore companies do not have to reveal what is in it, which again is typically toxic chemicals that can cause a host of health problems for both people and pets.
Synthetic fragrances contain a mixture of chemicals but often have phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde, benzene derivatives, ethylene glycol enters and acetaldehyde. Many of these chemicals are carcinogens, endocrine disrupters, and trigger allergies.
This study discusses some of the biggest issues with synthetic fragrances and links to other scholarly studies on the topic.
Yes, most air fresheners contain VOC’s. VOCs are chemicals released into the air from various chemicals. Both traditional and natural plug-ins can release VOC’s so it’s important to look into the brand you choose and ensure that you’re comfortable with the level you could be exposing your family to.
Traditional plug-ins VOC’s are typically from phthalates and formaldehyde which have been proven to increase the risk of serious health problems.
Non-toxic plug-ins can use essential oils as their natural scents, essential pools contain limonene, linalool and alpha-pinene which all release VOC’s into the air. Citrus oils, pine oil, lavender oil, eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil all contain VOC’s that are released when they are diffused in essential oil diffusers, air sprays, or plug ins. These are considered to be less toxic than VOC’s released from synthetic fragrances but could still cause health problems.
No, not all wall plug-ins and air fresheners contain VOC’s, there are many zero-VOC ones to choose from. I note if there are VOC’s in the brands I recommend here!
Wall plug-ins are often used in living rooms where people spend a large amount of their waking time. They are of course used to help eliminate unpleasant odors and bad odors in the home.
Some people use them in their bedrooms to help with creating a calm, peaceful, and relaxing sleep environment.
Bathrooms are a popular place for obvious reasons. Kitchens are also a popular place after meals have been to prepared to help eliminate odors from a meal.
Yes there are several all-natural alternatives to use in place of not only conventional air fresheners but also non-toxic spray air fresheners. Air purifiers, baking soda, vinegar, reed diffusers, wax warmers, and charcoal are all considered natural alternatives to spray air fresheners.
Air Purifiers are a popular alternative that can reduce odor and improve indoor air quality in your home. I personally own 3 air purifiers that I have running pretty much all the time and have noticed a huge reduction in odor and dust in my home.
Baking soda is another great alternative to reduce odors in the home. You can actually just stout containers/bowls of baking soda and it will absorb the bad smell. This is very popular for the refrigerator since it’s a smaller contained space. Many sprinkle baking soda on the carpet before vacuuming to help reduce or eliminate odor there as well.
Vinegar is said to reduce odors as well. This one is a bit of a contradiction because it initially can cause what many to consider an unpleasant odor but is supposed to then eliminate the odor that it is targeted at. I personally use a DIY vinegar cleaner throughout my home and find it does help with eliminating grim and odors.
Reed diffusers are another alternative to spray air fresheners and can offer similar effects. A reed diffuser uses reed sticks placed halfway in an essential oil mixture. The mixture moves up the sticks and then releases a pleasant scent into the room. These should be utilized for small spaces because they will not be able to fill larger ones easily. These are very portable and can be placed on a window sill, kitchen tables, side tables and do not need any electricity to work!
Solid air freshener is another alternative to spraying something into the air. Solid air fresheners typically come in gels, waxes or crystals. These can often be filled with toxic chemicals but the fact they are not spraying into the air is a huge plus. Air wick is a super popular conventional version of this style of freshener, there are not a ton a non-toxic ones but I’ll list the ones I am aware of. Solid air fresheners typically come in gels, waxes or crystals.
Charcoal based products. Charcoal is well-known for being an odor eliminator by absorbing bad smells. Some companies make air fresheners that have charcoal in them thanks to this odor absorbing property.
Reed Diffusers are a great choice because they do not require electricity and release less VOC’s than aerosol sprays or wall plug-ins. There are several non-toxic options and the fact that they aren’t an aerosol spray means they can add less chemicals to them that allow them to disperse in a fine mist into the air. While looking for some of the best non-toxic options I found it really hard to get a company to reveal their ingredients. I’m not down with anyone unwilling to share what’s in their product so my recommendations are from companies who believe in safety and transparency.
Earth Easy is a great brand that makes all natural diffuser blends from 100% essential oils. These are considered long lasting due tot he high essential oil content and no alcohol in their recipe.
Plant therapy has a great non-toxic option for a reed diffuser. I have used this brand for all my essential oil needs for the last several years and love the quality. This reed diffuser is of course, essential oil based but does contain Isopropyl myristate which can cause skin issues. Its not a VOC but something to be aware of if you’re not comfortable with it.
Wax melts or warmers are another way to reduce, mask or eliminate odor in your home. They like many other things fragrances are hard to find brands that are transparent with their ingredients. You also want to ensure they contain wax that is plant-based versus paraffin for non-toxic and environmental choices.
Kermode wax melts seem to be a great choice. They don’t disclose their ingredients but specifically state that they use soy wax, essential oils are free of dyes, phthalate, carcinogens, reproductive toxins, and other potentially harmful chemicals. They have great reviews and are made in the US!
Farm Raised is another wax melt that seems like a great choice. They also do not disclose their ingredients but utilize soy wax, essential oils and state they are free of dyes, parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, and other toxic ingredients. They have several scents, are US made and have good ratings on Amazon.
There are several great non-toxic air freshener sprays on the market. These can be used to spray fabrics or just the air in general.
Fresh wave is a great choice for all natural spray air fresheners. They have no harsh chemicals, synthetic perfumes, alcohol, or phthalates. They do reveal most of their ingredients outside of their proprietary brand blend. They have great reviews on Amazon as well.
Saje is a wellness brand that has all non-toxic, wall natural room sprays made from just water and essential oils. They reveal their entire ingredients list on their website and sell numerous other products including a reed diffuser.
There are numerous Charcoal products on the market that can reduce and eliminate odors in your home.
My favorite is the Attitude Living charcoal air purifier which is is made with charcoal and essential oils. It absorbs odor and then also releases a fresh scent. It’s supposed to last up to 6 weeks and actually eliminate odors thanks to the charcoal and resin.
This little Chada Magic Rock is a really cool concept. There isn’t a ton of science supporting the claims but its made from tropical charcoal that is supposed to be able to absorb odors, excess moisture and EMFs. They don’t have a ton of reviews but the ones they do have state they work great for reducing odors.
Bamboo Charcoal Bags are a great choice to reduce the odor in your home. These do not release any smells but absorb order really well. They have great reviews on Amazon and no chemicals to worry about!
I’m going to wrap my list up here but there are still several other options you could use. I have three air purifiers in my home which I think have greatly reduced the odor in my home. I also love to use simmer pots, they are an eco-friendly way to use scraps from leftovers. Let me know what you utilize in your home to reduce odor? Is there something I can add to this list?
If you are looking for some other all natural home products check out my guide on non-toxic paint that features Zero VOC paints.
]]>Pregnancy is such an amazing time (for many it also has some downside lol) but many its important to take extra precautions to protect our little ones. Nail polish is probably not your first thought of things to swap out but it can have some really nasty chemicals that could actually cause real harm to your developing baby. Many scientific studies have show adverse effects on developing fetuses that were exposed to the chemicals in nail polish so its important to look for a safe swap. Here I complied some information on toxic and non-toxic nail polishes as well as a list of the best pregnancy-safe non-toxic nail polishes on the market, plus my absolute favorite brand!
Many traditional nail polishes have ingredients that can wreck havoc on your body and are especially concerning for a developing fetus. The most common toxic chemicals found in traditional nail polish are;
Formaldehyde, toluene and phthalates are specifically concerning for pregnant women as they have all be linked to reproductive issues and potential harm for an unborn baby. They are actually commonly referred to as the toxic trio because they are highly toxic ingredients. Some have been linked to neurobehavioral abnormalities, birth defects, increase risk of miscarriage, preterm delivery, and developmental delays.
I had a conversation with a someone who said she really wasn’t that worried about the risk because she was using such a small amount of nail polish and maybe the risk is so minimal there shouldn’t be concern but in my opinion you never know.
I could not risk something as serious as a birth defect for my child so I could have cute nails for 9 months. The good news is there are many companies who’ve caught on to consume demand for safer products and we don’t go without polish through pregnancy for the sake of safety.
Safe non-toxic nail polish brands are made with a water-based formula instead of chemical based which obviously makes a huge difference. Non-toxic brands are popping up so frequently that there are tons of options. There are even large commercial companies catching on to the fact pregnant women want safer more natural nail polish products for themselves and their babies.
Maybe, multiple sources state it is safe to go to a nail salon while pregnant. However, there have been multiple studies on expectant mothers working in salons that show it is unsafe and can lead to low birth weight and smaller head circumference (Check one of those studies out here). These studies could of course be related to the amount of exposure which is very different if you do not work there versus just visit.
I think finding an alternative like a home salon that allows you to provide your own non-toxic nail products would be best. You could also have the option to open windows in a home salon or at your home home if you found a traveling nail technician. If that’s not an option going early in the morning when its less busy and some of the toxins have had some time to air out. Its important to remember that your talking about reducing risk for 9 months to ensure your baby is setup for the best possible life possible.
Yes, nail polish remover made from acetone is considered safe to use during pregnancy. It is important to use it in a well-ventilated area. I personally choose acetone free brands but this is a personal choice based on my ongoing decision to avoid chemicals, as I haven’t found any research that causes concern for using acetone removers.
Some nail polish contains ethyl acetate which can be more toxic so be sure to check the label and stick to acetone only products.
Yes, there are several brands of 10-free nail polish that can give you a safe, non-toxic gel manicure. Some of the brands listed below offer gel manicures, the most popular being SOPHi.
The number-free of these nail polishes means they are free from a specific number of traditional nasty chemicals discussed in this article. 3-free typically means they are free from formaldehyde, toluene and phthalates. While I recommend going for a 10 or 7 free formula even a 3 free is significantly better than a traditional polish product still containing every toxic ingredient available.
Be aware that not all 10, 5, or 3 free formulas are safe. There are several mainstream brands that greenwash customers into thinking their “natural” products are safe through marketing gimmicks. Sally Hansen’s line of pure nail polishes is absolutely safer than traditional nail polish but still has a few ingredients that can cause concern.
A note on most “non-toxic polishes”, they are significantly safer than traditional polishes but still have some ingredients that aren’t considered completely clean. Most of these ingredients that are cause for concern are skin irritants and not endocrine-disrupting chemicals but you have to make the choice for yourself as to what you are personally comfortable.
SOPHI is a non-toxic brand of nail polish that spun off of a kids safe brand, piggy paint. They are free of almost all harmful ingredients but still have one that is worth noting as a potential concern. The company uses ultramarines which are synthetic pigments for color. These aren’t overly toxic to humans but can cause skin irritation, the bigger concern is the environmental effects as they do not degrade overtime and add to overall pollution.
Piggy Paint: This is the brand that SOPHi came from its is a water-based nail polish is specifically designed for children and is non-toxic, odorless, and hypoallergenic. It also states it may contain ultramarines which are more an environmental concern than anything else.
Suncoat is a Canadian-based company that produces water-based nail polish that is free from harmful chemicals, vegan and states they are environmentally friendly. Developed by a chemist for her own daughter when she wanted to start wearing nail polish but she wasn’t comfortable exposing her daughter to all the harmful chemicals.
This is another super popular non-toxic brand with great reviews. They are free of many traditional toxins but buyer be aware they do contain fragrance which sucks since it can be very toxic and a lot of people are sensitive to artificial fragrances. Their parent company is called Londontown and prides itself on creating vegan, cruelty-free, less-toxic beauty products for their consumers.
Zoya’s brand is all about creating better products for their customers. Zoya was a cosmetologist who wanted safer products and started by removing the worst offenders like formaldehyde, toluene, and many more. They offer 10-free polishes and have branched into creating other beauty products.
Pacifica Beauty is one of the first non-toxic brands I bought when I began my non-toxic journey. They make great products and have a pretty big range of things they create. They are vegan, cruelty free and really environmentally conscious. Their products (like many polishes) come in a glass bottle and are infused with bio-ceramics to be good for your nails. I will note I own a few colors from this brand and find you must use base and top coat for it to stay as just a quick polish only won’t last more than 24 hours.
I absolutely love this brand and personally use their make-up line for some of my products. I trust them and love that everything they do is based on fruit pigments, including this nail polish. They are a high-quality brand that focuses on the safest standards for their non-toxic beauty products. Their amazon reviews are limited but all are 3+ star which is a great sign of the quality they produce.
Honeybee Gardens has an entire non-toxic beauty line. They are very philanthropic and have an animal care fund they donate too and encourage their customers to as well. They have several certifications from safe products companies and are working towards environmentally friendly products and packaging.
Sally Hansen created their Pure line in response to consumers wanting safer less-toxic options and people love it! The pure line has over 7000 5 star reviews and even the 3 star ones start with things like not bad which is a great sign.
This is basically the ultimate nail polish company. All they make is nail polish and their passion shows when you view their website that as 7 different color categories. You can also snag a discount by preordering new colors on their website before they are release! They state they are 7-free but non-toxic doesn’t seem to be their driving purpose.
This is a European brand that focuses on non-toxic polishes. All of their polishes are at least 5+ free with some of their newer versions being 20+ free. They ave received some beauty awards in the past from European magazines and brands.
This is another brand that has an entire beauty-line focused on non-toxic beauty. They are EWG certified and have all vegan, cruelty free products. They state a goal for their brand is to infuse products with ingredients that leave your body better after using those products, which sounds like a huge win.
This line was created by Gabriel as a nod to the lifestyle he grew up with where there was a big focus on homeopathic remedies, nature and holistic practices. He has grown this into a massive brand that produces numerous non-toxic, environmentally friendly products.
Butter London has an extensive nail care line with numerous nail treatments to target various problems like yellowing, weakness, and dry/brittle nails. They also have numerous other beauty products that are labeled clean beauty. They are big on adding nutrient rich ingredients like aloe vera, papaya, green tea extract, shea butter and bamboo extract into their products.
Sparitual is all about vegan, clean, holistic, self-care for the whole body. They have a wide range of nail polishes and other nail/hand care treatments. They state they are sustainable but do not mention any ways in which they are so it’s kind of a trust thing I guess.
Tenoverten, Ten over ten, is a non-toxic beauty brand that started by opening their own nail salon featuring clean, non-toxic products. They still run their nail salon in New York and have a full line of all things nail, food and hand care!
I included this one because it has a lot of reviews on amazon, 3000+ at the time of rating. I personally don’t love when sites do not have their own websites that detail information on their policies, practices and mission. I did run the ingredients through the skincharmisa analyzer and the fragrance was the biggest concern so it does appear to be mostly non-toxic. The peel feature is cool and if that’s something that interests you try it out, if not I’d stick to one of the other brands that have bit more information on them.
This is another Amazon only based brand which I’ve already stated isn’t my favorite type of company. You also have to buy a gift set but their product price is very cheap so the set comes out to be about what some other brands single bottle is. They state they are eco-friendly and 20-free but again without being able to see their actual practices it’s hard to know. The biggest plus for them is their variety of colors and fast dry technology which others have mentioned is an issue with other polishes.
This brand is about making great products that are non-toxic but still affordable for everyone. They have an entire beauty care line that is vegan, cruelty-free and non-toxic. You can only buy sets of their polish which is a bit of a down side but when you look at the set price its 5 separate colors and still fairly affordable.
Karma is an organic beauty brand that offers non-toxic, eco-friendly (think recyclable) nail polish. They are all about nails and hand care so they offer tons of other nail treatments that are also non-toxic. 75% of people who reviewed this product gave it 5 stars which is why they earned the highest rated polish here! Their website has tons more colors so check it out if Amazon is too limited.
OPI is one of the best known nail polishes in the nail game and they’ve finally come out with a less toxic version of their polish. Their product is 9-free which is better than some of the other commercial companies 3 free brands.
Jolie Vegan is all about mental health awareness and support through their brand. They name all their polishes happy, positive names and make sure to support organizations that are pro-mental health awareness and support. They are PETA-certified as well which is always good to hear.
Dazzle Dry is a nail polish only company that focuses on fast drying, long lasting non-toxic nail polish. They have a 4 step system that that has nail prep, base coat, polish and top coat to create a durable gel like nail. They also offer a starter mini pack which lets you get sample sizes of all those products to determine if the system is right for you!
That is my complete list of non-toxic nail polishes! I am sure there are more as it seems they are popping up everyday! Let me know what you think! I really do love the Ella and Mila line and Pacifica as well. If you are looking for other non-toxic beauty be sure to check out my Skincare page for all my beauty posts!
]]>Concealer is an absolute must for me and has been since I was in my teens. I now use my concealer most often for my dark circles but in early years I had more acne that I needed help keeping unwraps. Since I am wearing my make-up for typically 6-19 hours a day it is really important to me that I am putting safe organic high-quality products on my skin. In this article I am sharing with you a list of the best natural and organic concealers for dark circles that have great ratings, company details, and product details.
A note on organic beauty products; unfortunately finding products that use only organic ingredients is extremely unlikely due to the fact almost every brand will use some kind of lab made material that cannot be labeled organic. For me personally it is more important that my products use safe, non-toxic ingredients than all organic ingredients. On this list I focused on the best natural concealers that use organic ingredients and label themselves as organic. I did cross check all products with ewg.org and skincarisma.com to verify they were indeed non-toxic.
RMS has been producing organic beauty products with natural ingredients for 11 years. The main ingredients are Coconut Oil, Castor Seed Oil, Beeswax, Cocoa Seed Butter, Jojoba Oil, Tocopherol (non-GMO), Rosemary Extract. They also use recycled packaging and green manufacturing to make their products good for the earth too!
W3LL People is an all around great company. They have a list of over 1700 ingredients they will not use in their products, they work with fair-trade facilities and are researching ways to continue to make their packaging more environmentally friendly. They are also vegan and cruelty free to make them truly “clean.”
Juice Beauty was founded in 2005 and is committed to creating non-toxic organic products that perform well in clinical tests proving their effectiveness. The company mentions sustainability, vegan and cruelty products but doesn’t go into detail on those practices.
Ilia was founded in 2011 and is a well-rounded company focusing on safe non-toxic beauty products and sustainable packaging and practices. They have a make-up recycling program where you can mail back empty bottles, even if they are from another brand! They are also committed to sustainability and have an initiative where 1% of sales from their super serum go to planting trees in the rainforest!
100% Pure has been around since 2004 creating some of my absolute favorite products. In terms of natural, commercial beauty products I personally do not feel this brand can be beat. When you look at their ingredients list you can instantly recognize about 95% of the products listed on their labels which isn’t always the case with other brands. They strive to make their products as natural as possible and work towards sustainability. I found this brand many years ago while I was in college and feel it still provides phenomenal coverage, even as my skin ages.
Han Skincare is all about non-toxic, sustainable and cruelty free beauty products. They have a list of over 2700 ingredients they do not allow in their products, use recycled packaging for their products and ensure their entire line is vegan.
Kosas is my favorite organic concealer for dark circles and other eye issues. This brand puts clean beauty and ingredients at the forefront of their products. They have a huge emphasis on clinically backed products that show actual scientific results on skin through lab testing. They also are big on putting ingredients that are actually good for your skin and can improve it as you use it in the long run. They also offer sustainable packaging and practices which makes them a win, win, win!
Inika is another truly great clean beauty company. They focus on organic ingredients when possible and note them on their label. They have numerous certifications for organic ingredients, vegan products and earth friendly practices. Their packaging is recyclable and they are making huge strides in using less plastic and new plastic in their products.
Concealer is essentially like a foundation on steroids, it is hyper-pigmented to provide heavy duty coverage for problem areas of the skin. It can help correct uneven skin tone, skin scarring, dark circles, dark spots, age spots, and act as a highlighter when contouring your face.
Concealer can be used in a variety of ways. For this article we focused on the eye area and specifically the dark circles or area under the eye. Each of these concealers can be considered an eye concealer.
Concealer can also be used all over the face if needed. It can be used to conceal any kind of marks, discolorations or other skin issues on the face or body. A little concealer goes a long way so the small amount you receive should last a long time if used correctly.
Almost all concealers are cream concealer or considered creamy concealer because of the nature of what they are used for. There is also liquid concealer which is so similar to cream I’m not sure it’s worth the difference unless you’re a beauty guru.
I like to give my readers options to choose what works best for them. I cover many options so you can choose the best concealers for you skin. Some people have sensitive skin that requires more gentle ingredients than other skin types. Others may have dry skin or oily skin that needs specific ingredients for their skin.
I also included multiple companies because some had a limited shade range that may not be the perfect match for everyone. Along with shade, the finish can be a big factor, if you’re layering you may want a matte finish versus a natural finish if you’re putting just the concealer on.
We are also all looking for different coverage options and finishes. I have young children who are terrible sleepers so light coverage is not for me, I need full-coverage concealer to avoid looking like a I’ve pulled an all-nighter for the last 2345 nights.
Traditional concealers often contain synthetic chemicals that can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, or even health issues. Some of the most common ingredients in conventional concealers that cause the most concern are, parabens, fragrances, formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, phthalates, and sulfates.
Parabens are preservatives that may mimic estrogen and disrupt hormone balance.
Synthetic fragrances can trigger allergies or respiratory issues for some.
Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation.
Phthalates have been linked to reproductive and developmental issues in animal studies.
Sulfates are surfactants often used to create lather or foam in cosmetics. They can actually build up in your body with long-term use which is terrifying!
Talc is a mineral that is commonly used as an absorbent in cosmetics, but it has been linked to respiratory issues and cancer when inhaled over a long period, which is obviously concerning with make-up that you’re putting very close to your mouth.
Let me know which concealer you decided to try or if you have a favorite that isn’t on this list! If you are looking for other non-toxic products be sure to check out my other posts!
Liquid chlorophyll, is a natural green pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants, that play an essential role in photosynthesis. The liquid form of chlorophyll used for consumption is usually extracted from leafy greens such as spinach, parsley and alfalfa.
The extraction procedure usually involves pulverizing the plant matter and mixing it with a solvent, like ethanol, to draw out the chlorophyll. Once extracted, the liquid is purified and concentrated for use as a dietary supplement or other purposes. Many people refer to liquid chlorophyll as the building block of life because of the high amounts of antioxidants. It’s also touted as a green superfood that has no natural fat.
Liquid chlorophyll has a range of uses, from being taken as a dietary supplement for general well-being to treat bad breath by freshening it naturally. Some people even apply it topically as a skin healer and deodorant. It is also thought to alleviate inflammation and aid detoxification.
There are a few studies on the benefits of liquid chlorophyll consumption but overall scientific data is very limited. The studies I found are detailed here if you’d like to seek more information. A 2013 study from the Journal of Medicinal Food found it had anti-inflammatory effects. Another study in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry in 2014 also found it had strong antioxidant activity.
In 2018 the Journal of Nutrition found chlorophyllin to be effective in reducing a toxic compound in the blood of humans and animals. The Journal of Wound care conducted a study in 2017 that found a chlorophyll ointment promoted wound healing in rats.
Chlorophyll can also be used to support the immune system and its overall function. Chlorophyll is an amazing and powerful antioxidant that could potentially guard cells from free radical harm, which can lead to long-term inflammation and sickness. Also, some research suggests that chlorophyll may give a boost to the immune system by triggering the creation of white blood cells and increasing the potency of natural killer cells, which help fight off disease and cancer.
There are also several studies showing that liquid chlorophyll was highly successful in removing heavy metals from water sources. These studies haven’t been proven in the human body but many holistic healthcare professionals believe it has the same ability to act as a heavy metal detox for the body.
The FDA has not endorsed liquid chlorophyll as a treatment or preventive measure for any medical condition; however, they have classified it as GRAS, which is recognized as safe for common use in food or other products. You should of course always consult a certified medical professional before implementing any advice you found on the internet. The lack of endorsement from the FDA shouldn’t be cause for concern as they rarely monitor products they consider to be an herbal supplement.
There are a variety of ways to take liquid chlorophyll to meet whatever your needs are. Chlorophyll water is one of the most popular methods. To make this you simply mix it into a glass of water, most manufactures have directions on how to do this for their specific product. Other popular methods are simply taking it as a shot, or just dropping the drops directly into your mouth.
Depending on what you are trying to achieve you can take it daily, weekly or even less frequently. Some people take it daily for overall health and wellness benefits. Other people choose to take it for a specific amount of time to aid in the body’s natural detoxification processes.
Many recommend taking it on an empty stomach without anything else mixed with it to achieve maximum benefits. The empty stomach theory doesn’t have a lot of merit so if that isn’t your preference I wouldn’t worry. There is also a large subsect of people who prefer to take it with a smooth or green juice of some kind to mask some of the earthy taste. I personally prefer to put it in a green smoothie because I find the taste of a shot a bit too intense.
You’ll of course want to again follow the recommendations of a certified healthcare professional and the manufacturer’s recommendations on the best way consume their product.
No liquid chlorophyll is not safe for children. Many online sources, non-medical professionals, state that it could be very beneficial for children but the fact is there are no medical studies on the effects of chlorophyll supplementation for children. Kids are still developing and the benefits of any kind of chlorophyll supplementation do not outweigh the unknown risks. As with all supplements its of course important to keep them out of reach of children.
I am extra cautious about supplements I take and prefer to obtain my nutrition from food sources when possible. The following foods are naturally high in chlorophyll, adding these foods to your existing diet and could be a good place to start.
Other foods like broccoli, green beans, and zucchini also contain chlorophyll, as well as some fruits like apples and kiwi.
Yes you can totally make your own liquid chlorophyll at home by juicing some of the greens listed above. Note that this will be different from an actual chlorophyll supplement you buy as those companies specifically extract just the chlorophyll from foods. Juicing is still beneficial but won’t be a straight chlorophyll just a higher concentration than eating the entire vegetable.
Yes there can be. Liquid chlorophyll is usually safe when taken as instructed, and negative side effects are rare. However, mild side effects may occur such as: digestive issues like diarrhea, cramps or nausea; allergic reactions like itching, swelling or shortness of breath; green coloring of urine and/or feces, which is harmless but might be concerning; and photosensitivity, making skin more vulnerable to sunlight and causing irritation or sunburn.
Additionally, please note that liquid chlorophyll can interfere with certain medications, like blood thinners, and may not be suitable for those with certain medical conditions.
World Organic’s Liquid Chlorophyll is the best liquid chlorophyll on the market. This product has over 3300 5 star ratings on Amazon. The chlorophyll is extracted from organic high quality alfalfa leaves and preservative free.
World organic liquid chlorophyll appears to be one of the organic liquid chlorophyll products on the market. There are many liquid chlorophyll products but after extensive research almost no others are organic. I’ve listed a few other liquid chlorophyll products that are not organic but have exceptionally high standards for their products, even more in my opinion than the world organic’s brand.
Benevolent Nourishment Liquid Chlorophyll is produced according to GMP (good manufacturing practice) standards which ensures products are manufactured consistently to high quality standards. Horabaach is a large scale supplement manufacturing company dating back to 1971. They state they carefully source products and ensure they provide the highest quality products at affordable costs to their customers. They have multiple certifications regarding their lab environment and testing standards. They also state they have testing at every stage of their product which guarantees quality and purity. They have over 1600 5 star reviews on amazon but it is noted that many reviewers found the taste to be particularly unpleasant.
New Age is a brand I’m a bit on the fence about. They do list some of their certifications and standards but do not go into detail about their labs, sourcing or company founding. They are GMP certified but do not mention Non-GMO or organic processes. They have over 4200 5 star reviews from Amazon but multiple people mentioned there is some grain towards the end of the bottom that doesn’t mix into their liquids all the way when consuming.
While researching liquid chlorophyll supplements to recommend there were several more brands on Amazon that were not high-quality enough to recommend. I won’t call any out here but I urge you to look into the companies that you buy from. Look for companies that seek out certifications for their labs and products. There are several companies that are only on amazon, don’t list any certifications and it’s unclear when or how they began, these are companies I personally would be wary to buy from.

In this article I have gone through all the information for both loungers and given you some of my personal experience as a Snuggle Me Organic owner and someone who has personally tried the DockATot. So lets get into the Snuggle Me Organic vs. DockaTot lounger review!
It is important to note that for baby sleep, neither of these are the option you want to go with. These loungers are designed to be a safe place for baby to lounge, play, do tummy time and be held in. They do not meet the American Academy of Pediatrics safe sleep guidelines.
Baby loungers came into the marketplace in the early 2000’s. Both models we are looking at today were created by Mom’s for their newborn baby. These parents were looking for something that didn’t exist yet, so they created it. Baby loungers are designed to hold baby’s body in a comfortable snug fit kind of way. These are supposed to mimic a womb like environment that helps babies feel calm and soothed when they are not being held. My first daughter was not the biggest fan but my second really enjoyed her lounger.
The snuggle me lounger (the one I own) was perfect for me to move my newborn baby around while I played with my older child.
These loungers can be placed in areas that might not otherwise be safe like a bed, couch or floor because they have the barrier to prevent babies from scooting around and off a surface. Of course the safest place for them is in an area that a baby can never fall from and can cause injury.
Let’s get into analyzing both the Snuggle Me Organic and DockATot to determine what the best baby lounger for you is.
Snuggle Me is a brand founded in 2014 that specializes in baby products with an emphasis on making them safe, easy to use and portable for parents. They also believe in using high-quality, organic products that utilize non-toxic materials so parents do not ever have to wonder if the items closest to their babies are toxic. Snuggle Me originally stated with just their Snuggle Me Organic lounger but has since expanded to making larger snuggle me loungers, feeding pillows, clothes and other accessories.
The Snuggle Me Organic is filled with organic cotton and shaped in an oval like crescent shape, to mimic the feeling of a baby being held or hugged. It is also referred to as a baby nest because of the size, shape and function.
The edges of the pillow, where the filling is, are soft but the filling is firm enough so it won’t collapse or giveaway if the baby rolls towards it. The base of the pillow is a thin layer of soft 95% organic cotton that has no padding. This bottom layer means that the baby will likely feel whatever surface they are placed on so it’s important to ensure you place it on a flat surface.
The snuggle me measures 29 x 17 x 4.5 inches which is fairly small and easily portable to your home, park or other locations. The outer shell material is 100% organic cotton and non-toxic in materials used to produce it. The filling is polyester fiber which is typically considered non-toxic.
It is worth noting there is also a larger size of the snuggle me for older babies and toddlers to use.
I have owned the same snuggle me organic for 5 years now. I plan to use it with my 3rd baby and it has worked well for us. It has held up great and I personally love how soft and flexible it is for baby. I also love that it has fit in both washing machines I’ve owned over the past 5 years.
The DockATot is a luxury baby lounger designed for use with babies aged 0-8 months old. It can be used for lounging, playing, tummy time and even diaper changes. The DockATot founder, Lisa Kotsianis, designed the first baby lounger for her own personal use in 2006 when she had her first baby. She then began developing them commercially and has grow into an international brand. The DockATot brand has branched into selling numerous other baby items including pillows, bassinets and clothes.
The DockATot lounger is developed and manufactured in Europe. It comes different sizes one being a smaller size called the DockATot deluxe and a larger size called the DockaTot Grand for older babies and toddlers.
It is designed to create a womb-like environment for the baby by providing a soft padded bottom to lay on and firm supportive padded sides to hug the baby.
It is made in Europe with Oeko-Tex certified fabric meaning it is free of harmful chemicals used to produce fabrics. It comes in a variety of colors and has lots of accessories that can be added on to increase the functionality of the DockATot. They also state they use breathable fabric as well as hypoallergenic fabrics and materials.
It measures from most outward edge to outward edge 29 inches (73.7 cm) L x 18 inches (45.7 cm) with the buckle closed.
It can be used with the buckle closed for a traditional lounger shape that hugs baby all around or with the buckle open to give leg space for diaper changes, tummy time or a leg room for baby.
The DockATot goes through extensive testing for durability, toxins, performance, colorfastness, and harmful materials like phthalates and heavy metals. They even test their packaging to ensure every element that touches your DockATot is safe for your baby and home.
I used one that my friend had for her baby when we went to visit. It was great quality, the pillow was firmer than the snuggle me organic and the fabric did not feel as buttery soft as the snuggle me. The pillow also did not feel as it cradled baby as much because the pad went under the pillow instead of scooping baby up. It felt slightly bulkier than the snuggle me but still very portable. I do believe I used a version that is no longer made and has since been upgraded but they still appear very similar.
The DockATot is almost double the price of the Snuggle Me Organic. The covers for the DockATot are also almost double the price of the Snuggle Me Covers so this is an important consideration. Both loungers are also more expensive than similar products on the market.
The DockATot regularly submits their products to testing for fabric performance, seam strength, colorfastness, durability towards holes and tears as well. Snuggle Me Organic does use organic materials and does not seem to have the same intense testing standards as DockATot. Some reviews have mentioned they feel the Snuggle Me Organic does break down some with extended use.
The snuggle me organic uses 95% organic materials for their product. The cover is 100% organic cotton and not treated with flame-retardants or chemicals of any kind. The DockATot baby loungers are made with 100% cotton but it is not organic. The DockATot does use Oeko-Tex fabric which ensures they are free from toxins, harmful substances. Both baby loungers use high-quality materials that are great options for a non-toxic choice.
The snuggle me organic does not have any accessories that can be added on. It is a very simple minimalist design that is made for families who are only looking for a baby lounger, not a multifunctional product. The Snuggle Me Organic does allow you to purchase an extra cover to use when washing, traveling or just give it a new look. The DockATot has numerous accessories that can be added on for an additional cost. They have a sun cover, mosquito net, toy arch, diaper changer and travel bag. If you are looking for something more versatile than just a lounger the DockATot is a clear winner here.
The snuggle me organic fabric is so incredibly buttery and soft. I also love the design of the lounger because it does really cradle baby and create a little hammock like nest for baby to lounge in. The main drawback is the base of the snuggle me is a thin fabric layer with no additional padding. The DockATot is a bit firmer than the snuggle me and does not feel as cradle like but does have a padded base for additional comfort regardless of where you set it.
You can toss the entire Snuggle Me Organic directly into the washing machine or just the cover if needed. You can also place it on low in the dryer to dry. The DockATot requires some more detailed guidelines to wash, the cover should be washed in warm water in a garment bag and hung dry, while the pad is hand wash only with an instruction to lay flat too dry. The inner sleeve is to be washing in cold water and the inner tub is to be washing in hot water and then tumble dried on low. As you can see the fact each part needs specific, separate detailed washing guidelines makes it a bit more time consuming to care for.
The Snuggle Me Organic and DockATot both submit to testing, safety regulations and deem a safe environment for baby as the utmost importance. Snuggle Me Organic has not had an safety incidents reported to the company the CPSC, or Health Canada in their 13 years in operation. The DockATot has received notification on violations of safe sleep standards as most recent as June of 2022. They have also had 4 reports of incidents of death or injury regarding their product on saferproducts.gov.
Snuggle Me Organic is the overall winner between the two for me but you may have different priorities and wants in your baby lounger and the DockATot is loved by many families. I value comfort, ease of use and safety for my baby so the fact the snuggle me is super soft material that cradles baby was important. I also love that I can easily wash the whole thing quickly and easily without googling directions and the safety aspect is huge for me. I personally struggle with postpartum anxiety and value that the Snuggle Me Organic has been a safe space for babies for the last 13 years.
Let me know you thoughts on both loungers and which one you use for your family. The opinions in this article are of course based in my own research, experience and ability to analyze my findings.
