Simple and Safe Dry Shampoo

There are a ton of dry shampoos on the market and I have tried a ton of them! I have tried really toxic brands and other brands that are marketed at being “more natural” versions. I think many of them that state that are mostly greenwashed. The recent benzene scares is also a real concerns since thats what powers those dry shampoos sprays! This is a super simple 3 ingredient recipe that is non-toxic, all natural, safe and effective. It uses products you probably already have in your house and is totally customizable!

The first ingredient is corn starch. This is used mostly in cooking recipes to help make things thicker. It is extracted from corn and does not have any chemicals or additives in it! You can use organic or regular, organic is probably a better bet for non-toxic purposes but all I had was regular so thats what I used for this recipe. I went ahead and linked all the products I used in this post so it does contain affiliate links for each linked product!

Organic Corn Starch

The next ingredient is not actually necessary but since I have darker hair I opted to add it. Coffee grounds. Coffee has actually been shown in a few studies to stimulate hair growth at the follicle, which is just a little added benefit here. I actually prefer to use cocoa powder but did not have that so I opted for coffee, which has that potential to boost hair growth so its a win-win. I will note that I absolutely did not ground the coffee fine enough, if you opt for coffee I think it works fairly well but for sure grind it very very fine!

Organic Coffee

The last ingredient is where you can really make this product specific to you. Essential Oils! It can also be skipped but takes this from basic boring cornstarch to a little nicer, smell good “product.” You can use any high quality essential oil, but my favorites are from Plant Therapy. They are organic, a fairly small business and their customer service is on point! I went with peppermint for my dry shampoo because it is supposed to help with dry skin and flaking. Right now where I’m at it’s winter and my natural hair routine only calls for a once a week wash so my scalp is struggling right now. Any extra help I can get I’m taking. If I didn’t use peppermint I would probably use rosemary, because it helps promote hair growth or lavender because its my favorite scent!

Ok onto how to actually do the thing!

Check out my before and after! My hair gets oily after a few days and it always amazes me how much the color changes when I use this! I still needed to add a little more to the back side of my head but you can see the massive difference and once you really work it in it looks very natural.

    • WOW! What a total mix-up on my part! So sorry and thank you so much for letting me know! It’s absolutely corn starch!

  1. WOW! The before and after is incredible. Definitely going to have to give this a try. My hair gets super oily super quick now, especially after having my babe. I’ve tried a few different brands but nothing seems to do the trick or leaves a white caste on my hair. Looks like mama has a new recipe to try! 💕

    • Crazy how much babies can change so many things about our bodies! Hair was not even on my pre-baby radar as something that would change! I hope you like it 🙂
